Do your ears itch, inside? 👂🏼Mine do, and it drives me nuts!!! It happens all the time and particularly on my right side. I should buy stock in Q-tips!

📌 Did you know itchy ears can be a surprising symptom of menopause?

Here’s why:
During menopause, hormonal changes, particularly the decline in estrogen, can cause dryness in the skin—including the delicate skin inside and around your ears. This dryness often leads to irritation and itchiness.

🔎 Other possible causes include:
➡️ Fluctuations in hormone levels disrupting your body’s natural balance.
➡️ Increased skin sensitivity during this phase.
➡️ Allergic reactions to earrings, hair products, or skincare routines you once tolerated.

✨ Relief Tips for Itchy Ears:
1️⃣ Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.
2️⃣ Moisturize: Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer around the ears. For inner ear dryness, consult your doctor about safe ear drops.
3️⃣ Avoid Irritants: Swap out earrings or hair products that may cause allergic reactions.
4️⃣ Humidifier: Adding moisture to the air at home can prevent skin from drying out.
5️⃣ Talk to Your Doctor: If the itching persists, a healthcare provider can rule out other causes, like infections, and recommend treatment.

Your body is going through a natural change—these small adjustments can help keep you comfortable! 🌿💛

I thought I was fat in this picture (the first pic).

It was taken around December 2012. I was 160-ish lbs., the higher end of a healthy weight for my height. I was eating healthy and working out, regularly. Within a couple of years, I started cycling about 3 times a week and lost about 12 or so lbs. and was really in the best shape of my life, cardiovascularly speaking.

Then in 2015, like a ton of bricks dropped from the sky, perimenopause hit me out of nowhere. Yikes! WTH?!

Many women go through the menopause transition with few symptoms. I had them ALL…or at least it seemed that way to me. The worst was the anxiety, depression and weight gain. There are other symptoms I would have loved to have NOT had, but those 3 were the worst and I think they exasperated the other symptoms. I’m now on medication for the anxiety and depression, although some days are still a problem, but the weight gain is a huge ongoing struggle. I’ve gained about 75 lbs since the 1st picture was taken (see pic 2, taken last month). I’ve lost and gained back the same 30 lbs 4 or 5 times.

But now it’s getting scary. It’s not just for aesthetic or vanity reasons that I need to lose the weight. In addition to the crazy pills, I take 2 blood pressure medications each day, I have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and now I’m am pre-diabetic. It’s time to (really) get serious about losing the weight for good.

Day 1, for the gazillionth time, coming soon.

Late post…I just realized that I didn’t post anything for the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend, last month. It was hot, humid and the air quality wasn’t good because there was several fires in Southern California during that time, but it was fun! Unfortunately, I was swept during the 10K because I was just a tiny bit off pace… 30 seconds faster and I probably wouldn’t have been swept, but that’s OK because I enjoyed myself and I tried! I also did their yoga as part of the half marathon weekend and that was really cool… I was right in front of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle!

📚Understanding Vasomotor Symptoms 🌬️

Did you know that the journey through perimenopause involves more than just hormonal shifts? 🚺 Let's dive into the history and causes of vasomotor symptoms – those hot flashes and night sweats that many women experience.

🤔 **Causes of Vasomotor Symptoms:**
Vasomotor symptoms, another name for the hot flashes and night sweats experienced during the menopause transition, are closely linked to hormonal fluctuations. Estrogen, a key player, undergoes erratic changes during perimenopause, affecting the body's thermoregulation. Additionally, neurotransmitters and the hypothalamus play vital roles in this complex process.

🌡️ **Temperature Regulation Disrupted:**
Imagine your body's thermostat going haywire! That's essentially what happens. The hypothalamus, responsible for regulating body temperature, becomes more sensitive to slight changes, triggering sudden heat sensations.

🔄 **The Rollercoaster of Hormones:**
Estrogen, our hormonal maestro, takes center stage. Its decline and sporadic surges contribute to the unpredictability of vasomotor symptoms. The body interprets these hormonal fluctuations as signals to cool down, leading to those infamous hot flashes.

🔍 **Ongoing Research & Support:**
Understanding these symptoms helps in developing effective strategies for managing perimenopausal challenges. Ongoing research seeks to unravel the intricacies, offering hope for tailored interventions and improved quality of life.

💪🏽 In my experience, Black Cohosh relieved my vasomotor symptoms, significantly…other women turn to hormone replacement therapy. If looking into HRT, please see your OBGYN and request FDA approved hormones. And remember, the rule of thumb is lowest effective dose for the shortest amount of time.

🌼 Perimenopause & Anxiety: Finding Balance 🌼

Perimenopause, that transitional phase before menopause, is often accompanied by a rollercoaster of emotions, including anxiety. Why is it so common? Here are a few key reasons, along with tips to manage it. 💪

1️⃣ Hormonal Changes: Fluctuating hormone levels, particularly estrogen, can affect neurotransmitters in your brain, leading to mood swings and anxiety.

2️⃣ Sleep Disturbances: Night sweats and insomnia can leave you fatigued and anxious. Prioritizing good sleep hygiene is a must.

3️⃣ Physical Symptoms: Experiencing hot flashes, irregular periods, and other physical changes can be stressful, leading to anxiety.

4️⃣ Life Transitions: Perimenopause often coincides with other life changes, like kids leaving home or aging parents, adding extra stress to the mix.

5️⃣ Self-Care Is Key: Now, more than ever, self-care is crucial. Embrace mindfulness, exercise, and support networks to navigate this journey.

6️⃣ Seek Professional Help: If anxiety becomes overwhelming, don't hesitate to consult a therapist or healthcare provider for guidance.

Perimenopause is a transformative journey, and it's okay to seek help when needed. You've got the strength to navigate through this. 🌟💪
