Advocacy Meeting Update: Senate Bill 89 (SB89) has officially passed both the House and Senate and is now headed to the governor’s desk for signature. This marks a major milestone in modernizing physician assistant (PA) practice and improving access to care across Alaska.

SB89 is designed to:

* Modernize outdated statutes (many dating back to the 1970s)
* Allow PAs to practice at the top of their education, training, and experience
* Streamline collaborative agreements and reduce administrative burden
* Ensure continued oversight through the State Medical Board
* Protect against unnecessary insurance restrictions on PA practice

Honored to represent Alaska alongside Jared Wallace at the 2026 AAPA House of Delegates in New Orleans as AKAPA’s Junior HOD Representative. Over three days, more than 300 delegates from across the country came together to discuss and debate important issues shaping the future of the PA profession.

Key conversations included student loan access for PA students, guidance for PAs working internationally, diversity and inclusion in PA education, health literacy education, support for federal tax incentives for preceptors, and many other resolutions impacting our profession and patients.

The House of Delegates process was energetic, collaborative, and inspiring — with resolutions discussed, amended, debated, and ultimately voted on by representatives from across the nation. One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was hearing the wide range of perspectives, backgrounds, and ideas that delegates brought to the table.

Grateful for the opportunity to advocate for Alaska PAs and proud to help represent our state at the national level. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts and perspectives throughout the process.

Honored to represent Alaska at the 2026 AAPA House of Delegates in New Orleans. Alaska PAs had several key issues reflected in this year’s discussions and policy actions, including updates to the PA Oath, student loan access for PA students, support for PA preceptors, recognition of PA surgical training, and increased visibility of PAs in healthcare communications.

One especially meaningful discussion centered on modernization and the evolving role of PAs within the healthcare team, particularly as more states advance Optimal Team Practice principles and following Alaska’s recent passage of SB 89.

This year’s House focused heavily on professional identity, workforce development, education access, surgical practice, and strengthening recognition of the PA profession nationwide.

Grateful for the opportunity to represent Alaska and advocate alongside colleagues from across the country on behalf of our profession and the patients we serve.

📣 Alaska PAs: Big Things Are Happening!

The latest Presidential Update from AKAPA highlights some of the most significant advancements for our profession in Alaska’s history.

✅ SB 89 (PA Modernization Bill) has passed the Legislature and is awaiting the Governor’s signature, bringing long-overdue modernization to PA practice in Alaska.

✅ HB 110 (PA Licensure Compact) continues to move forward, helping improve workforce mobility and access to care across state lines. Awaiting transmittal to the Governor.

✅ HB 195 updates Alaska statute to recognize the professional title “Physician Associate.” Pending Governor’s signature.
