This week, Alaska AHEC Program Director Gloria Burnett joined colleagues from the National AHEC Organization (NAO) on Capitol Hill to advocate for the future of the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program and the health workforce that serves communities across the nation.

During the visit, Gloria had the honor of presenting Senator Lisa Murkowski with the 2026 National AHEC Organization Public Policy Leadership Award in recognition of her steadfast leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing AHEC Reauthorization and supporting the full range of Title VII and Title VIII health workforce programs. The award was accepted on the Senator's behalf by Legislative Aide Cassidy Hobbs, whose dedication and collaboration have been instrumental in these important efforts.

Senator Murkowski has long been a champion for strengthening Alaska's health workforce, helping expand opportunities for students, supporting healthcare professionals, and improving access to quality care in rural and underserved communities throughout Alaska and across the country.

We extend our sincere congratulations and heartfelt thanks to Senator Murkowski for her continued leadership and advocacy. The impact of her support reaches far beyond Washington, D.C.—it is felt in communities where future healthcare professionals are trained, supported, and inspired to serve.

Lynn Troyer, an academic advisor for the School of Nursing , traveled to Bethel as part of the Alaska-Rural Community Overdose Response Project (AK-RCORP) -- a partnership between the UAA Alaska Center for Rural Health and Health Workforce (ACRH-HW), the UAA Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies (CAAS), and the State of Alaska’s Project HOPE. Lynn joined staff from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation to distribute naloxone (Narcan) kits to the villages of Toksook Bay, Mertarvik, Tununak, Nightmute, and Chefornak.
