Insurance 101: What is a deductible? 🤔

A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket for covered medical services before your insurance starts paying its share. 💵

Important fact: deductibles generally reset at the start of every calendar year or plan year. 🗓️ That’s why a visit in January might cost more out of pocket than the same visit in November.

Not sure where your family stands with your deductible? Call our office at (907) 929-7337 📞 and we’ll help you figure it out. 💙

Insurance 101: Does your child have two plans? 🤔

When a child is covered by two insurance plans 👨‍👩‍👧, often one from each parent’s employer, we bill the primary plan first and then the secondary. This is called coordination of benefits, and it can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket costs. 💵

The key is letting us know about both plans before your appointment 📅 so we can bill them in the right order. It really does make a difference. ✨

Questions about how your child’s coverage works? Call our office at (907) 929-7337 📞 and we’ll help you figure it out. 💙

Michelle Haimowitz has been back in Alaska since 2021 practicing as a Pediatric GI Nurse Practitioner.

Born and raised in New Jersey, she first came to Alaska in 2004 as a nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Providence. She left a few years later to attend the Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program at the University of Pennsylvania.

After graduating with a concentration in acute and chronic care, Michelle worked at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in various pediatric specialties, including gastroenterology, neurosurgery, and hospital medicine.

When not at work, she enjoys exploring Alaska with her partner and dog. Indoors, she spends her time knitting and engaging in various fiber and fabric hobbies.

Please give a 👋🏼 to Michelle!!

Ronda Nakoa is a lifelong Alaskan and a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with nearly 20 years of experience in caring for children in Alaska.

Prior to becoming a nurse, Ronda served in the United States Navy. Ronda obtained her BSN from UAA and started her nursing career as a staff/charge nurse at Providence Hospital in pediatrics and PICU. While working in pediatrics, Ronda became interested and received training in pediatric oncology. Ronda decided to go back to college to obtain her MSN, in hopes of working as an NP specializing in pediatric oncology. Ronda looks forward to many more years of caring for Alaska’s kids.

Please drop a 👋🏼 to another one of our amazing nurses, Nate Smith.

Nate was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. He graduated from Northern Arizona University with a BSN in Nursing. Nate’s professional career in the medical field began at the age of 16 when he was working as a caregiver at an assisted living facility. Nate discovered he loved helping people and making a difference in their lives.

Nate’s nursing background includes pediatric and neonatal specialties. He chose pediatrics while in nursing school after getting to deliver a baby. He loved working pediatrics and landed a PICU fellowship in Alaska. And we couldn’t be happier to have him here!

When Nate is not working, he enjoys fly fishing, rafting, golfing, running, and spending time with his wife and three wonderful children.
