💡 Myth: NMDP shares your personal information.
✅ Fact: Your privacy is protected. Your cheek swab sample and tissue type are identified by a unique code and kept separate from your personal information. NMDP does not share your name, contact information, or genetic type with government agencies or companies outside of its clinical partners.

💡 Myth: If I can't donate blood, I can't donate blood stem cells.
✅ Fact: Different guidelines apply. Many people who aren't eligible to donate blood may still be eligible to donate blood stem cells.

💡 Myth: Donation is always surgery.
✅ Fact: About 90% of donors give peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC), a nonsurgical outpatient procedure similar to donating plasma. Only about 10% of donations are bone marrow donations.

How can a blood stem cell donor save a life?

For patients with blood cancers and other serious blood disorders, a blood stem cell transplant may be their best hope for a cure.

After transplant, healthy blood stem cells from a donor travel to the patient's bone marrow and begin producing new, healthy blood cells. Over time, these cells replace the diseased cells causing illness.

That's why finding committed donors is so important. Every new registry member increases the chance that a patient will find their life-saving match.

If you're between the ages of 18 and 35 and in general good health, consider joining the NMDP Registry today. Registration is simple, and your commitment could someday give a patient a second chance at life.
