đ¸ď¸ INSIDE YOUR BODY â PART 3
FASCIA: THE HIDDEN WEB HOLDING YOUR BODY TOGETHER
Imagine peeling an orange.
Underneath the skin is a thin white web that surrounds and connects everything inside.
Your body has something surprisingly similar.
Itâs called FASCIAâa continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds, supports and connects muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels and organs throughout the body.
And although most people rarely think about it, fascia plays an important role every single time you stand, stretch, bend, walk or move.
đŹ WHAT EXACTLY IS FASCIA?
For years, fascia was often treated simply as the tissue that had to be moved aside to reach muscles and organs.
Today, researchers recognize fascia as a complex, biologically active connective-tissue system.
Think of it as an interconnected 3-D web running throughout your body.
Healthy fascial tissues need to accommodate movement and forces between different structures. But injury, inflammation, prolonged inactivity, repetitive movement and other stresses can affect connective tissues and how comfortably we move.
⥠WHEN SOMETHING DOESNâT FEEL RIGHT
People may experience:
⢠stiffness
⢠restricted movement
⢠tenderness
⢠reduced flexibility
⢠sensations of tightness or pulling
⢠discomfort that seems connected to movement or posture
Importantly, these symptoms can have many different causesâfascia is only one part of the picture.
đ§ FASCIA & FLUID MOVEMENT
Here is where things become especially interesting.
Fascial tissues occupy the same interconnected environment through which blood vessels and lymphatic vessels travel.
Movement and muscle activity help support normal circulation and lymphatic flowâwhich is one reason regular movement is so important for the body.
đ WHERE BODYWORK FITS IN
Massage, stretching, movement and other manual therapies can temporarily influence how tissues feel and move and may help some people experience greater relaxation, comfort and range of motion.
Hijama/cupping creates suction that mechanically lifts and deforms superficial skin and connective tissues beneath the cup.
đż THE BIG LESSON
Your body isnât simply a collection of separate muscles and organs.
It is an interconnected living system.
Muscles influence movement.
Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients.
The lymphatic system participates in fluid balance and immune function.
And fascia helps connect, support and organize the structures between them.
Understanding the body changes the way we think about wellness.
