A Pap test is an important part of cervical cancer screening, but it does not screen for every gynecologic cancer.

Even with a normal Pap result, stay aware of new or persistent symptoms and share your personal and family cancer history with your healthcare provider. Follow the cervical screening schedule recommended by your healthcare provider..

When should mammograms begin?

For most women at average risk, mammogram screening should begin at age 40. Depending on the guideline and your individual needs, mammograms may be recommended every one to two years.

Your screening plan may be different if you have a strong family history of breast cancer, a known gene mutation linked to breast cancer, or a personal history of the disease.

If you notice a new breast change, contact your healthcare provider rather than waiting for your next routine screening.

A lump is not the only breast change worth noticing.

Changes in breast size or shape, ni**le changes or unusual discharge, swelling, dimpling, puckering, or other skin changes should be discussed with your healthcare provider especially when they are new or unusual for you.

Most breast changes are not cancer, but they still deserve attention. Because early breast cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms, routine screening also matters.

Talk with your primary care or women’s health provider about when breast cancer screening is right for you.

October is widely recognized for breast cancer awareness but women’s cancer awareness should not stop there.

Along with breast cancer, it is important to recognize the five main types of gynecologic cancer: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancer.

Screening recommendations depend on your age, health history, and personal risk. Among gynecologic cancers, only cervical cancer has a routine screening test. Knowing your body and discussing persistent or unusual changes with your healthcare provider also matters.

Understanding your personal risk and staying current with recommended screenings are important parts of caring for your health.

A meaningful evening in Washington.

Anna Health was honored to attend celebrations at both the Embassy of El Salvador and the Embassy of Vietnam on September 16.

At the Embassy of El Salvador, we were deeply grateful to receive recognition for our years of work providing gynecologic care and supporting women’s health in the country. It was a meaningful acknowledgment of a relationship and mission we’re proud to be a part of.

Later that evening, we were graciously welcomed at the Embassy of Vietnam for its National Day celebration. We’re grateful for the friendship, hospitality, and the opportunity to celebrate alongside so many members of the Vietnamese and diplomatic communities.

AMH testing is easier to get than it used to be. At-home and direct-to-consumer panels will send you a result, often with very little explanation attached.

AMH gives insight into ovarian reserve, meaning your egg supply. Higher results are often seen in younger patients. Lower results may reflect a smaller egg supply than is typical for your age.

What it does not do: AMH does not measure egg quality, it cannot predict whether or when you will conceive, and on its own it does not diagnose infertility.

Providers read AMH alongside your age, your cycle and ovulation patterns, an ultrasound of your ovaries, and your own goals and timeline. Those pieces together tell you more than the number does by itself.

Pap. Pelvic exam. Annual visit. Most people use these interchangeably, and they are three different things.

A Pap is one test. It screens cervical cells for changes related to cervical cancer.

A pelvic exam is a physical exam of your reproductive organs. A Pap can happen during one, but the exam is not the test.

Your annual visit is the whole appointment. Periods, birth control, sexual health, breast health, screening, symptoms, your history, and anything you have been meaning to bring up.

Why it matters: when all three go by one name, it gets easy to assume a normal Pap result means you are covered for the year. The test is one part of it. The visit is where the rest gets looked at.
