In honor of International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day and Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m sharing why I have recently made changes in my practice, and lessons chronic illness and mental health challenges have taught me about pacing, sustainability, and healing.
❤️‍🩹
For years, I believed pushing through exhaustion, pain, stress, and running on caffeine and adrenaline was strength. I kept late evenings, overextending, and giving from an empty cup because I care deeply about the work I do and the care I provide. But I realized that constantly overriding my body came at a cost. This has taught me: healing doesn’t necessarily align with endless productivity and the grind culture we live in.
❤️‍🩹
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned about has been pacing. Pacing means respecting your limits, resting without guilt, and stopping when you still feel okay. It’s doing 20 minutes of chores and then lying down with a heating pad before doing another 20 minutes later. It’s doing a 12-20 minute workout instead of pushing for 45 minutes to an hour or longer. It is learning to work with your body instead of against it. For me, it has meant changing my schedule, limiting appointment slots, and even referring dear patients to trusted colleagues because I know they will receive excellent care. A huge part of pacing is nervous system regulation, which is also a goal of every acupuncture treatment I give—known in Chinese Medicine as “calming the shen,” or supporting/treating the spirit/heart-mind.
❤️‍🩹
As a practitioner, these changes have been humbling. Caring for others while learning how to care for yourself is complicated and vulnerable. Invisible illness often asks people to become experts at masking, adapting, and surviving quietly, even while carrying pain, grief, guilt, exhaustion, and heartbreak. But, boundaries mean you care. For May 12, I’m sharing for anyone navigating chronic illness, burnout, pain, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and/or exhaustion: you are allowed to slow down, rest, and honor your body. Your worth is not measured by how much you can push through.

Because May is both Mental Health Awareness Month and Fibromyalgia Awareness Month, I wanted to take an opportunity to be open about some of the things I have been struggling with for a long time, and what I have been learning more deeply in recent months. For the first time, I’m learning to listen to my body instead of pushing through pain, exhaustion and adrenaline.
☯️
There’s a version of me many people see: the practitioner, the healer, the one holding space, the one who keeps going. And then there is the quiet reality: living with chronic illness, navigating crushing fatigue, physical pain and mental health challenges, and learning how to build a life around healing instead of just survival.
☯️
For a long time, I kept that part of my life private, for my own protection, because invisible illness is hard to explain, and because when you’re caring for others, it can feel vulnerable to admit you’re struggling too.
☯️
But this month feels like the right time to speak more openly. Navigating illness as a practitioner has been one of the most humbling experiences of my life. I have learned after many fumbles and hard lessons that:
❤️‍🩹 Healing isn’t linear.
❤️‍🩹 Rest without guilt is productive.
❤️‍🩹 Boundaries mean you care.
❤️‍🩹 Asking for help is strength, not weakness.
❤️‍🩹 You can support others while still needing support yourself.
☯️
It has also made me a better practitioner. I understand chronic illness, nervous system dysregulation, invisible struggles, and mental health challenges intimately. I have experienced grief, frustration, sadness and hard days, but I’ve also learned resilience, softness and acceptance. I am sharing this for connection, advocacy and to remind anyone who needs to hear it: you’re not alone. I see you and I am you.

Hi friends 😍 I haven’t posted in awhile, but I recently was honored to be a guest on great friend and colleague ‘s podcast, Priestess Sh*t. We had such a rich conversation and I’d love to share it with you. Click on the link(s) in my bio to view on Patreon or listen on Spotify. We discussed acupuncture, cocooning, self care, crystals, vision boards, and more! I am also sharing for the first time what it is like to be navigating chronic illness and mental health challenges from the viewpoint of an holistic healthcare practitioner. There’s even more I want love to share with you on these topics - more to come next month!
