Act Now to Help Protect Access to Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Education
The U.S. Department of Education has issued a proposed rule titled Accountability in Higher Education and Access Through Demand-Driven Workforce Pell: Student Tuition and Transparency System (STATS) and Earnings Accountability.
This proposed rule would create a federal earnings accountability framework for higher education programs that participate in federal student loan programs. If graduate programs do not meet the metrics outlined in this framework, they will lose access to Federal Financial Aid. All of our acupuncture schools are dependent on Federal Aid and it is predicted that ~90% of acupuncture school in the US will fail if this rule is implemented.
MAAEAM supports transparency and accountability in higher education. However, the proposed metrics changes in this rule may not accurately reflect licensed healthcare professions like Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (AHM), where graduates complete national certification and state licensure requirements after graduation and many practitioners build independent or small-business practices over time.
Although the bill containing this rule has already passed, the rulemaking process allows for public comment and may influence how the law is implemented. We have an unusually short window for action as this rule was given a public comment window of only 24 hours. It will end tonight (Wednesday, May 20).
MAAEAM is calling on all members and friends to take action today, submitting your public comment. CCAHM has created a template that makes commenting very simple, and if you have time for more, we encourage you to personalize your message as these tend to be more persuasive. However you choose to act, please do. Our profession needs you today, and we thank you for all you do to share our medicine and your talents with the world.
