Early findings show behavioral telehealth programs are making a meaningful impact in schools, reducing behavioral challenges and disruptions. However, about a third of the 300 North Carolina schools surveyed reported wait times longer than a month, highlighting the need for greater access to care.

Our goal is to be a statewide and regional partner for programs like this, expanding virtual care capabilities, minimizing time away from the classroom, and improving long-term health outcomes.

The new data comes from a survey by researchers at UNC Chapel Hill to assess the impact of school-based telehealth programs.

Children’s health services in North Carolina haven’t been able to keep up with the state’s rapid growth.

NC Children’s will build additional capacity, strengthen the pediatric workforce, and coordinate with other health systems to bridge gaps in care across the state.

Today, children receive inpatient care in North Carolina from pediatric programs housed inside adult hospitals. This model serves families reasonably well, but it is far from optimal.​

Our children deserve better than shared space in an adult facility. ​

Chief Operating Officer Ian Buchanan and Chief Clinical Officer Angelo Milazzo joined in thoughtful discussion with Dr. Dev Sangvai, Secretary of NC DHHS, and Dr. Karen Chilton, Chief Quality Officer for WakeMed and Chief Clinical Officer for WakeMed Children's.

The commitment to close care gaps is a clear priority in the Triangle — and across the state. We appreciate the opportunity to share our goals for world-class pediatric care and the impact we aim to have as a support network for pediatricians and health systems across North Carolina.

We look forward to groundbreaking in late 2027, and the nationally competitive environment for research, recruitment, and destination care that NC Children’s will establish.
