What is chronic venous insufficiency?

Chronic venous insufficiency, or CVI, happens when the veins in your legs have trouble moving blood back up toward the heart. Instead of flowing efficiently, blood can begin to pool in the legs, which may lead to symptoms like swelling, heaviness, aching, cramping, visible veins, skin changes, or restless legs.

CVI can progress over time, which is why early evaluation matters. If youโ€™ve been noticing ongoing leg symptoms, they may be more than everyday tiredness.

A vein screening can help identify whether venous insufficiency may be affecting your circulation and what treatment options may be available.

"It's just swelling," is not always the answer.

When you experience swelling in your leg, your body might be warning you about a deep vein blood clot.

Ignoring these signs can lead to a sudden emergency.

If that clot travels to your lungs, it can cause a life-threatening pulmonary embolism.

Catching a clot while it is still in the leg is key to preventing a silent, life-threatening event.

Our patients ask us all the time: "What should I actually be checking at home between appointments?"

The answer might surprise you. Some of the earliest signs of vein and vascular disease show up long before pain does, and most people walk right past them every single day.

Here are 5 things our board-certified vascular specialists want you to start checking weekly. ๐Ÿ’พ Save this before you scroll past.

1๏ธโƒฃ The Leg Heaviness Clock โฑ๏ธ

Pay attention to when your legs start feeling heavy during the day. Is it after 2 hours on your feet? 4 hours?

2๏ธโƒฃ The Ankle Comparison Check ๐Ÿ‘€

Every evening before bed, look at both ankles side by side in good lighting. They should look symmetrical. Puffiness, fullness, or visible skin stretching is a classic sign of venous pooling that deserves attention.

3๏ธโƒฃ The Skin Texture Scan ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Run your fingers slowly along your lower calves and ankles. Healthy skin should feel soft and consistent. Hardening, thickening, or a leathery texture โ€” particularly around the ankles โ€” is a sign called lipodermatosclerosis.

4๏ธโƒฃ The Nighttime Symptom Log ๐ŸŒ™

Before you fall asleep tonight, ask yourself honestly: are your legs restless, cramping, or throbbing? Nighttime is when vein symptoms surface most aggressively because your body is finally horizontal and circulation is shifting. Symptoms that only appear at night are still symptoms and they're telling you something important.

5๏ธโƒฃ The Wound Watch ๐Ÿฉน

Check your lower legs and ankles for any cuts, scratches, or bruises that seem to be healing slower than they should. Poor venous circulation reduces your skin's ability to repair itself. Wounds that linger in the lower leg are one of the most overlooked warning signs of progressive vein disease, and one of the most serious.

Here's what our specialists want every patient to take away from this:

Vein disease rarely announces itself loudly. It builds quietly โ€” in the details most people are too busy to notice.

The patients who catch it earliest are the ones who were paying attention before symptoms became unavoidable.

Which of these have you been overlooking? Tell us below ๐Ÿ‘‡

If anything here hit a little too close to home, a free vein screening is the fastest way to find out what's actually going on beneath the surface.

One of the most rewarding parts of vascular care is offering procedures that can truly change a patientโ€™s quality of life.

For patients living with symptoms from uterine fibroids, uterine fibroid embolization, or UFE, may provide a minimally invasive treatment option without traditional surgery. For many, that can mean relief from symptoms that have affected their comfort, routine, confidence, and daily life.

At United Vein & Vascular Centers, our team is proud to help patients explore treatment options that support meaningful next steps toward relief.

I don't think most people realize how easily a simple leg cramp can turn into a serious medical emergency.

We tend to brush off a dull ache in the calf as a pulled muscle, or just a sign of getting older. But sometimes, it is something much more serious happening beneath the surface.

There is a direct connection between your legs and your lungs that doesn't get talked about enough.

When a blood clot forms in the deep veins of your leg (DVT), it can break free and travel straight to your lungs, causing a life-threatening blockage called a pulmonary embolism.

It is scary to think about, but knowing what to look for is everything.

If you or someone in your family ever notices sudden leg swelling, unusual warmth, or redness that doesn't go away, please don't ignore it. It is always worth getting checked out.

Have you or a loved one ever had to deal with a DVT scare? It is so much more common than people think.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Comment QUIZ and we'll send you our quick symptom quiz to find out where your vein health actually stands.

Most people think vein problems are just cosmetic. And that's exactly why most people wait years too long to do anything about them. ๐Ÿ‘‡

The truth? By the time the average patient gets evaluated, vein disease has been progressing quietly beneath the surface for a long time, often a decade or more.

Here's what our board-certified vascular specialists would tell every woman serious about protecting her leg health long term.

5 things to stop doing immediately:

๐Ÿšซ Ignoring leg heaviness, achiness, or swelling at the end of the day โ€” that's not just fatigue

๐Ÿšซ Sitting or standing for hours without moving

๐Ÿšซ Grabbing compression socks off Amazon without knowing your proper grade

๐Ÿšซ Getting sclerotherapy without a venous duplex ultrasound first

๐Ÿšซ Dismissing varicose veins because they don't hurt yet

Here's what that last one really means: vein disease doesn't wait for you to be ready. It progresses whether you pay attention to it or not. What's manageable today becomes a much harder conversation five years from now.

5 things to do instead:

โœ… See a board-certified vascular specialist

โœ… Get a thorough evaluation to understand what's actually happening beneath the surface

โœ… Move consistently โ€” even short walks throughout the day protect your circulation

โœ… Wear properly fitted medical-grade compression during long days on your feet

โœ… Treat early. Always. Future you will be grateful you did.

Your legs carry you through everything. It's time to return the favor.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Comment QUIZ and we'll send you our quick symptom quiz to find out where your vein health actually stands.
