Patients are always in the center of everything we do in transplantation. Our responsibility is to listen to their voices, address their needs, and make sure they remain at the center of the decisions that affect their care.

ASTS President, Dr. Henry Randall, joins Eric Racine, PharmD, MBA and Kemi Osundina-Mkhize, PharmD, on the latest episode of the Patient Advocacy Voices podcast to discuss transplant access, patient advocacy, trust, and the future of transplantation.

We invite you to listen to the episode and learn more about our work at ASTS: https://patientadvocacyvoices.buzzsprout.com/2303007

“My Hispanic heritage is central to how I understand medicine and the kind of physician I strive to become.”

Growing up in a Hispanic community, Dr. Elina Serrano witnessed firsthand how language barriers, immigration experiences, socioeconomic factors, and health literacy can impact a patient’s ability to access and navigate care. Those experiences inspired her to pursue a career in medicine and advocate for patients facing similar challenges.

Her path to transplant surgery began in medical school, when she witnessed a transplanted kidney produce urine for the first time, a moment she still considers one of the most rewarding of her career.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to share Dr. Serrano’s story and celebrate the contributions of Hispanic transplant professionals while reaffirming our commitment to expanding access to transplantation for all patients.
