Dialysis facility closures are outpacing new openings across the U.S. — and that should concern everyone in the kidney community.

A recent study found that smaller facilities, rural communities, and vulnerable patient populations are being hit the hardest as more dialysis centers shut their doors. For patients, that can mean longer travel times, disrupted care, and added stress on an already difficult journey.

What do you think is driving these closures — workforce shortages, reimbursement challenges, industry consolidation, or something else?

We want to hear from patients, caregivers, and advocates: how would the loss of a local dialysis facility impact you or your community?

The number of U.S. dialysis facilities closing has risen since 2018, particularly smaller, rural and Midwest facilities, according to study data published in American Journal of Kidney Diseases. Previous data showed that the number of dialysis facilities opening increased between 2006 and 2016, but....

Dialysis patients deserve the right to keep the insurance coverage they rely on during one of the most difficult times in their lives.
In her recent letter to the editor, DPC Board Member Shekeila Harris highlights why Congress must act to restore protections for dialysis patients and help prevent families from facing overwhelming financial burdens while managing kidney failure. 💙

DPC Patient Ambassador Cassie Bertwell is urging Nebraska’s congressional delegation to support the Restore Protections for Dialysis Patients Act, highlighting the critical need to preserve stable, affordable insurance coverage for people living with kidney failure.
Cassie’s recent letter to the editor underscores the serious risks dialysis patients face when coverage becomes unstable, including gaps in care, financial hardship, and disruptions to lifesaving treatment. The legislation would help restore long-standing protections that allow patients to maintain private insurance coverage during the critical transition period before Medicare becomes primary.

Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. We also recognize the sacrifices veterans continue to make long after their service ends, including facing serious health challenges like chronic kidney disease.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 7.7% of veterans are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease over the course of a year.
This Memorial Day, let us honor those we’ve lost by continuing to support and care for those still fighting battles at home. 💙
