People often look at athletes and think: They have everything talent, money, success, recognition, opportunities.
But what we don’t always see is what’s happening internally.
External motivators like fame, money, achievement, scholarships, contracts, followers, or validation can absolutely drive performance. They can motivate us to work harder, push farther, and chase goals. But external success does not automatically create internal peace.
This is something we see often in conversations around substance use and addiction. Sometimes people use substances not because they are weak or unmotivated, but because there are unresolved emotions, pain, pressure, identity struggles, loneliness, anxiety, or emptiness underneath the surface.
Athletes are especially vulnerable to this because so much of their identity can become tied to performance, expectations, and external validation. And when happiness becomes something we constantly chase externally, it can leave people feeling exhausted, disconnected, and unfulfilled even when they “have it all.”
True healing comes from understanding why we want what we want.
From building internal motivation, self-worth, self-awareness, and emotional health.
From healing the parts of ourselves that success alone cannot reach.
Because happiness is not something we achieve and permanently arrive at.
It’s something we create internally through growth, connection, purpose, and healing.
The goal is not to stop striving.
The goal is to make sure we are not sacrificing ourselves while striving. 🤍
