The CPDD is one of the two official publications of the ACCP and is an international, peer-reviewed journal focused on publishing high-quality clinical pharmacology studies in drug development which are primarily (but not exclusively) performed in healthy subjects during the early phases of drug development, or after marketing approval. Acceptance of a manuscript in CPDD is determined by scientific rigor and technical soundness rather than perceived importance of the presented results. In addition to publication of original research articles, CPDD encourages submission (with or without invitation) of Editorials, Commentaries and Reviews.

Since its introduction in 2012, CPDD has included an international Editorial Board consisting of basic and clinical scientists who are well-established in the field of clinical pharmacology and represent academic, regulatory and industry sectors. The Editorial Board works closely with the Editor-in-Chief to provide strategic oversight and guidance, as well as to assist with operational requirements.

The CPDD is published by Wiley Periodicals Inc, a subsidiary of John Wiley & Sons Inc (Publisher).

The Clinical Pharmacology Review Course

The Clinical Pharmacology Review Course is presented by ACCP and the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology to provide a comprehensive review of topics of broad interest to clinical pharmacologists. The Course will combine presentation of new developments in clinical pharmacology as a method for review of topics associated with the core concepts in clinical pharmacology. The Course format will be didactic sessions, focusing on core knowledge areas in clinical pharmacology and include clinical management case discussion to enhance problem-solving skills in a format commonly used in board examinations. Content begins with four talks to highlight the fundamental principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and their therapeutic applications to special populations. The remainder of the course includes six talks in selected clinical therapeutic areas that apply the fundamental principles to clinical decision-making for the clinically-minded MD, PharmD or PhD scientist.

Dr. Venkatakrishnan joined ACCP in 2013 and has served on the Credentials Committee, the Working Group on Fellow Requirements and is an active contributor on the Public Policy Committee. He has published numerous manuscripts in ACCP journals, serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology in Drug Development and is also an ACCP New Member Ambassador. Dr. Yanovski obtained his MD and PhD degrees at the Univ of Pennsylvania, completed residency training in Pediatrics at the Children’s Hosp of Philadelphia and fellowship training in Pediatric Endocrinology at NIH. Why is this article important to your practice?

This study explores innovative methods to predict body fat content using easily measurable anthropometric variables like age, height, weight and waist circumference instead of relying on the expensive and less accessible dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning. This research is crucial as it provides an improved and validated algorithm for predicting absolute body fat, which can enhance clinical practices related to obesity management. Understanding these new predictive methods can directly impact practice, especially considering the critical role that body composition plays in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Efficient and accurate body fat estimation methods are essential for optimizing drug dosing and therapeutic strategies in obese patients, thereby improving treatment outcomes and patient care. Learners that complete this activity will be provided an evidence-based, validated and predictive algorithm as an alternative to DXA scanning to accurately estimate absolute body fat.

Target Audience:

Interprofessional team of Physicians, Pharmacists, PhDs, Nurse Practitioners and other health care professionals who use the assessment of body fat content in clinical trials and clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:
Describe at least one limitation to the use of DXA scanning for obesity clinical trials and/or drug development;
Identify at least one DXA-determined measurement that was selected as a dependent (outcome) variable in this study;
List at least one surrogate variable that was predictive of DXA-determined absolute body fat; Identify which surrogate variable had the greatest impact (i.e., magnitude of change) on DXA-determined total body fat in men and women utilizing standardized regression coefficient data.
