New episode of Living Medicine is live!

Psychedelic therapy is reshaping mental healthcare. With recent regulatory changes and increasing interest in alternative treatments, practitioners are exploring how to integrate these powerful tools safely and effectively. What does it take to train for and implement these therapies in a clinical setting?

According to psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy practitioner Dr. Sandy Newes, integration requires both knowledge and experience. She emphasizes the importance of understanding the unique effects of substances like ketamine, participating in experiential training, and collaborating with medical prescribers. Practitioners should prioritize trauma-informed care, client choice, and ongoing self-reflection to maintain ethical and effective practices. By combining clinical expertise with hands-on experience, therapists can navigate this evolving field.

In this episode of Living Medicine, Chad Franzen of Rise25 chats with Dr. Sandy Newes, Co-founder and Programming Director of Living Medicine Institute, about psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy training. Dr. Newes discusses training programs and experiential learning, the role of ketamine in therapy, and embedding trauma-informed care into clinical practice.

The Living Medicine Institute was built for clinicians, by clinicians.

Dr. Sandy Newes (PhD) co-founded LMI and she and our entire faculty team actively see KAP clients.

What makes our Level One different:
✔️ Instructors who practice what they teach
✔️ 7 experiential medicine sessions — all 4 routes of administration
✔️ Cohort of 12 — real connection, not a crowd
✔️ Trauma-informed curriculum built for immediate clinical use

Enrolling now for our next 16-week cohort. Reach out with any questions at [email protected].

I want to tell you why we built this training around direct experience—because it’s the thing that most sets it apart, and the thing clinicians are sometimes most unsure about at first.

You can read every paper on the non-ordinary states ketamine can produce. You can study the phenomenology in detail. And still, when you sit with a client who is in that territory, there’s a kind of knowing you simply won’t have unless you’ve been there yourself.

Not because the research is wrong. Because some things are learned in the body, not the head.

When you’ve moved through the medicine yourself—felt the loosening, the openings, the moments that ask for stillness rather than words—something shifts in how you hold it for someone else. You stop performing competence and start embodying presence. You trust the process because you know it from the inside. Your nervous system learns what calm looks like in that room, and your client’s nervous system borrows it from yours.

This is also why we keep the work trauma-informed and resiliency-focused throughout. Direct experience without a strong container isn’t a teaching method—it’s a risk. So we hold both: the depth of real experience and the structure that makes it safe and integrable.

Seven experiences. Multiple routes. A small group moving through it together, with experienced providers alongside you the whole way.

That’s not an add-on to the curriculum. It is the curriculum.

Warmly,
Sandy Newes

“Professionally relevant and personally impactful.”

That’s how every cohort of our Level One Clinical Intensive describes the experience — and it’s why the program is consistently rated 5/5 by participants.

"The trainers were knowledgeable, caring, intuitive, and relational in their facilitation of this program. My experience was one of respect, collaboration, and synthesis. I was encouraged to make deeper connections with my cohort members, which helped this feel like more than just another training. In addition, the fact that it was an experiential workshop, complete with several ketamine sessions built in, helped me understand this work from the inside and not just from an academic perspective. I am glad I took this course, grateful for my new peers, and feel honored to be introduced to this work by these exceptional trainers" -Greta M. Lutman, Level One Participant

This isn’t just continuing education. Our graduates regularly describe the Level One Clinical Intensive as a turning point in their clinical confidence, in their relationship to the medicine, and in the direction of their careers.

Next cohort starts June 10, enrollment closes soon. A few spots remain!

New episode of Living Medicine is live!

Psychedelic medicine is opening new conversations about healing, consciousness, and the relationship between modern care models and ancient wisdom. As this field grows, how can practitioners, entrepreneurs, and communities honor the sacred roots of these medicines while building safe, ethical systems for the future?

Jorge Camil Starr emphasizes respect, humility, and intentionality. As a social entrepreneur working at the intersection of innovation, psychedelics, and social impact, he maintains that psychedelic work should not impose an agenda or interpretation on participants, but instead create a supportive container where people can access their own insights. Jorge suggests integrating ritual thoughtfully, meeting people where they are, learning from indigenous wisdom without appropriating it, and building strong safeguards around preparation, facilitation, and integration.

In this episode of Living Medicine, Dr. Sandy Newes sits down with Jorge Camil Starr, Founder of ENOVA and CEO and Founder of Entheogyn, to discuss ethical psychedelic care rooted in indigenous wisdom. Jorge explains Entheogyn’s vertically integrated model, the role of ritual and intention, and how legal systems can support safety, respect, and harm reduction.

We know that many of you wonder about how to find a prescriber, and I wanted to share a great resource with you.

Dr. Dana Lerman is the founder of Skylight Psychedelics, and she is offering a free info webinar TONIGHT (5/20) at 8 pm EST for clinicians and professionals interested in ketamine-assisted therapy, prescribing models, and building ethical, sustainable practices in this space.

I’ve gotten to know Dana over the last few years, and many people in the LMI community have found her to be really helpful as a prescriber for their private practice. I also really like her and very much appreciate her vision and her work in the field.

If you are interested in learning more, I invite you to attend the webinar or contact her directly at [email protected].

I will put the webinar registration link in our stories.

Dana was also a guest on the podcast a few months ago, if you want to check out our discussion on the LMI YouTube channel and Spotify.

I hope this is helpful!
