“I’m holding in there”, “doing okay”, or “oh, I’m alright” seems to be the common response these days to asking Western North Carolinians how they’re doing. And it makes freaking sense! We were absolutely pummeled by the wave of destruction that hurricane Helene brought us, and then a second big wave from the election came through right on the hurricane’s tail and wiped through our supply of light that we had just started to rebuild. Leaving us again, in a place where we’re trying to figure things out, all the while inching towards the darkness and slowness of winter.

It’s hard to feel like one can hold it all, how can you when it’s so big, but yet there’s still so much to do on a daily basis? I felt that I needed a small and tangible way to be able to check in and be present with my grief each day, to commit to mourning, and this led me to finding The Grief Deck.

I’m planning to pull a card each day and will post it to my stories. I invite you to take 60 seconds or more to feel, to move, to meditate, to draw, to journal what the day’s card brings up for you. To be present with our grief for a few minutes every day, for 30 days, together.

Starting up again on Nov.3rd!!! 🥰 I am so thrilled to be able to teach perinatal yoga twice a week 🧘🏿‍♀️🧘🧘🏽‍♂️

Working with pregnant and postpartum people is truly a gift, and after going over a month without teaching (for the first time ever since I started teaching!), during my first class back on Nov.3rd, I immediately could feel that it was right where I needed to be. ✨

They say that birthwork finds you and not the other way around, and I’m so glad that I am able to help facilitate movement and community with folks bringing new life into this world. How freaking rad is that?! 💪💫

Hope to see you all on the mat again oh, so soon. :)🤍

As the vast needs and knowledge of the destruction and horrors from Hurricane Helene continue to arise, I find myself reminded of the lessons I have learned through my years of work that I feel most passionate about: providing birth support to pregnant folks.

From missing holidays, to staying with clients through multiple shift changes at hospitals, to so many nights of sleep missed, to rescheduling everything under the sun, to having to drop the things you care about at a moments notice, witnessing people’s best moment of their lives, witnessing the worst moment in someone’s life. When we feel so incredibly passionate about something- we’ll put almost everything else on hold, and this can be to our own detriment. Living like that and sacrificing anything towards the cause can be a straight shot towards burnout. And burnout can be so very hard to come back from- I’ve been there!

When we’re involved in this level of passion work, we also need to think about sustainability. We are going to need multiple rounds of volunteers through many months, this is going to be a long term effort.

How can you continue to show up for this work, day after day, month after month, year after year, with the same vigor you did on day 1? Especially when they’re saying it could take years, not months, for our community to recover?

1. Take care of yourself: you cannot pour from an empty cup
2. Stay soft: don’t let the work harden you
3. Be aware of the adrenaline crash: you can’t do it all, and that’s okay
4. Create a volunteer shift for yourself: this helps to avoid burnout
5. Take “outside” breaks: so you can continue to show up for your community in the way you want to
6. Find your community: find the people who are doing the same work that you are, you can’t do this alone
7. Don’t forget that love exists: love fuels all

Note: depending on the work & your circumstances not all of these can be applicable & I do not mean for this list to be all encompassing, please allow space for nuance. But for those doing general volunteer work and who wish to continue long term, please consider some of these. Thank you for caring! 🤍

✨ “I’ve been practicing yoga for 15 years and I’ve never been to a class like this before.” ✨

This is beautiful feedback I received from a traveling practitioner who popped into my q***r yoga class the other week. They continued to comment around the sense of deep grounding, somatic embodiment, and matching of the energy of the class to the current moon cycle. They said they wished they lived in town so they could come every week! 🥰

Y’all my classes are slowww, they work with somatic principles & aim to keep you in the present moment, they are trauma-focused and inclusive and affirming for all genders, sexualities, and body types. Come as you are, if it’s your first class or 100th you are welcome here!

🧘🏻 Come for the movement, leave with community. 🧘🏼🧘🏿‍♀️🧘🏽‍♂️

Doulas can absolutely still be a wonderful support during both planned and unplanned cesareans. From being the first to go back to the OR with you, to capturing the first moments of your little one’s arrival 📸, to providing helpful tips and tricks for cesarean recovery, and more! 💫

So very touched by this sweet fam’s words. I’m so lucky to be a doula and to be able to work with such strong, loving, & incredible folks! 💪🥹🥰

Grief is inherently tied to birth. Grief for how something once was, grief for what could have been, grief in something not going the way you had wished for, grief for the world you want your children to grow up in.

Birth is death, and death is birth, and sometimes they happen at the same time, the threshold between being so fine, so thin.

Today on trans day of remembrance I’m also thinking of a free Palestine, I’m thinking of individual and collective grief, and I’m dropping into the liminal space between birth and death to learn more. To sit next to grief and mourning and respect, honor, immerse, and companion it.

These are heavy times, you are not alone, and there is no wrong way to grieve.

These excerpts are from the book: “Empty Cradle, Broken Heart” by Deborah Davis, Ph.D

Y’alllllllll, holy moly I am so thrilled to announce that I’m officially a Certified Full Spectrum Doula with .advocacy !!!

2.5 years and two whole different full spectrum doula trainings later I’m officially- Paulina Schau, CFSD (BADT). Sure has a nice ring to it. 🥹

In case you don’t know, a full spectrum doula is a professional companion who supports people through a full range of reproductive health-related experiences. 💫

I chose .advocacy to certify through because I whole heartedly feel comfortable with their teachings & values.

Their values include: Anti-oppression, Justice, Inclusivity, Accessibility, Humanity, Visibility, Healing, Cultural Humility, and Community.

So much time, effort, and consideration has gone into this and all I can say is- woo hooooo!!! 💖🥹💪🌈

The story hour will be from 1pm-2pm, with time for socializing and activities before and after. This event is free, but if you have the resources available, please consider bringing cash to tip the performers! :)

The Gayby-Sitters Club is a free monthly social meetup group for Asheville q***r, trans, gender non-conforming, and questioning parents of kiddos from pregnancy/gestation to school age. They aim to help folks find community throughout the younger years of their littles. This is a place for meeting new friends, to bring your kids, to relax, and to SAY GAY all over the hekkin' place. The Gayby-Sitters are an inclusive group, we respect pronouns, and expect attendees to do the same.

*Please note that Firestorm requires masks at all events.* We understand that it is difficult for small children to keep masks on, so activities will be outside on the patio where masks are not required. Every single birth is different. There will only be one just like yours! ❄️

This one was fast! Which in theory a fast birth sounds favorable, but it can often leave the birthing person trying to catch their breath (literally and figuratively) and it can be hard to stay present in the moment when so much is happening in the body at an accelerated pace. 🏎️💨

What are some things we can do to help when things around you are moving fast? 🌠 Setting- notice the dim lighting, this can help release oxytocin & keep the vibes calm. Breath- taking a deep breath together to come back into the body. Touch- (if desired) can help to ground, and remind the birthing person that they are not alone, we are right there with them, and they are safe.

As says, think about your birth bubble 🫧, who do you want there beside you? Who do you feel safe with?

A doula can help you think through creating *your* bubble. You deserve it. There’s only one birth just like yours. ✨

A million thanks to and for this beautiful 📸 and for inviting me in to their one of a kind birth. ❄️ You both are amazing! 🤍
