When Vanessa Murad surveyed 33 occupational therapists who work with children with ARFID, every single one told her the same thing: families need a clear, compassionate guide, and it doesn't exist. So for her OT doctorate capstone at Yeshiva University's Katz School, she wrote it.

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder can turn every meal into a struggle, and families often navigate it with little support. Murad's Parent & Caregiver Guide to ARFID, developed with ARFID specialist Anne Sinha, OTR, brings the OT lens to the whole mealtime: the child's sensory system, emotions, positioning, and environment, broken down into steps parents can actually use.

We arent done just yet. Not everyone speaks, but we all have a voice. Advocacy matters. 💜 They're is still time. Our youngest are in the most vulnerable and malleable time in their lives, places like Head Start allow or community to grow, be better, and allow our children to have a better start to life. Early Intervention is key, for all.

Families of children with disabilities already struggle to find childcare and early learning programs that will enroll and support their child. Now, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is proposing changes that could make one of the country’s most inclusive early childhood programs less accountable for doing so.

Head Start was including children with disabilities a decade before federal law guaranteed their right to a public education. Its performance standards require programs to address assessments, accommodations, exclusion, IEP coordination, and other parts of serving children with disabilities. HHS wants to remove many of those detailed requirements.

In a new op-ed for The 74, our CEO Katy Neas warns that disability laws are not enough if Head Start programs lose the rules that make inclusion possible. Under the proposal, programs would no longer have to assess every child’s development, accommodate every child’s participation, follow the same protections against suspension and expulsion, or help families navigate the IEP process. It would also remove the specific rule barring programs from turning children away because of a disability or chronic health condition.

For decades, Head Start has shown that disability inclusion in early childhood education can work. Weakening the standards that help programs deliver it would move us in the wrong direction.

Uncomfortable talks often are avoided. With autism and other medical complexities, it is important to research h and have these talks. Understanding 'why' these things happen help to better understand what to do when it arises. Simply saying 'no, stop that' is just not enough for these individuals.

Let me know if you need more resources, because for OT this is a targeted area and these talks need to happen sometime.

“How do I get my autistic child to stop touching himself?”

It’s one of those questions parents may feel too embarrassed to ask out loud.

But what if the answer isn’t simply “make them stop”?

Understanding why the behavior happens—and teaching privacy, boundaries, and appropriate settings—can make a big difference. 💙

Summer break. Transitions. Back to school.

These are trying times for most people who have children in general but moreso with those that thrive on routine and needing frontloading.

Ideas to help?
-Call your school to find out your teacher early and use the school directory online to see a photo of the teacher.
-Call and ask for a tour of the building prior to orientation when the building is packed and overstimulating
-Look up photos of your new building
- Use social stories every day for 2-3 weeks up until that first day
-Transition slowly over a few weeks time towards your school morning routine to reduce morning battles

As I sit in the therapy waiting room today I noticed something. Disability is nondiscriminatory. I look around and see moms, dad's, LGBTQ+ parents, parents of Asian descent, African American parents, etc. All different ages, all different in presentation... yet all in the same boat.

Disability is a minority that anyone can fall into at any time. Remember that as you vote and look at tentative bills. We need all our voices to work together, for all of our children.
