Wildfire Smoke Impacts Air Quality in Athens-Clarke County

Athens, GA — The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department is advising residents to be aware of declining air quality conditions due to wildfire smoke drifting into the area from south Georgia.

These conditions may pose increased health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD, as well as children and older adults.

The Fire Department’s Emergency Management Agency is closely monitoring the smoke plume path and remains in contact with Georgia Emergency Management officials.

Residents, especially those in higher-risk groups, are encouraged to take extra precautions and closely monitor local air quality conditions.

Recommended Safety Measures:
-Ensure medications and inhalers are readily accessible.
-If outdoor activity is necessary, consider wearing an N95 or another NIOSH-approved mask.
-Avoid strenuous activity and limit prolonged exposure outdoors.
-Use air conditioning if available; set systems to recirculate indoor air when possible and
utilize air purifiers.
-Keep windows and doors closed to reduce indoor smoke exposure.

The Fire Department also encourages community members to check on neighbors, family members, and others who may be more vulnerable to the effects of poor air quality.

If extended time outdoors is unavoidable, individuals should remain mindful of air quality levels and pay attention to any symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, or irritation.

Public safety is a shared responsibility, and even small steps can help protect the health of our community during these conditions.
