Connecticut Nurse Hypnotist Marc Sacco, RN, EMT-P induces complete numbness using hypnosis (and video records it all on his cell phone while the patient never once flinches) -meanwhile the NP performing the surgical procedure calmly and carefully sutures the laceration closed.
It is highly significant to note that bleeding too is also being very effectively controlled through words and cadence alone -no cauterizing, no medical clamping with instruments, no packing, and no drugs to facilitate vasoconstriction.
Just words and rhythmic cadence.
The power of the patient’s mind in medicine has for years been largely underutilized, even ignored, and should be enlisted for better patient outcomes in a variety of clinical situations.
This untapped potential and its implications are enormous.
We are presently at the very early days of an upcoming revolution incorporating Mind-Body Medicine as a valuable adjunct to a multitude of other branches including anesthesia and surgery, oncology, cardiology, infectious disease, emergency medicine, and prehospital emergency medicine.
Many cutting edge hospitals across the country like Duke Medical Center, The Cleveland Clinic, the Mayo Clinic, and John’s Hopkins already offer complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments such as medical hypnosis for patients heading into surgery.
At my behest last year Piedmont Athens Regional here in Athens, Georgia began teaching weekly “Hypnosis for Cancer” patients classes.
Change is blowing in the wind.
