Audios May! May is always one of my favorite months because only the coolest kids were born in May! šŸ˜‚

Lulu graduated from her crate, we finished teacher training, Parker went to the state meet, voting was happening, lots of puppy snuggles, and in between all the rain there were some pretty epic sunrises. šŸŒ…

Our brains are wired for negativity.

You can have a bunch of incredible things happen in your day and only one ā€œbadā€ thing.

Guess which one you’ll remember?

One of my students left class the other day apologizing because she felt like she was having such a hard time memorizing the practice.

The thing is, she had everything memorized for the first 25 minutes of her practice, and the last 15. But somewhere in between those two sections, she needed a little bit of help.

To her, it seemed like she just wasn’t getting it. Her brain focused on the one ā€œbadā€ thing and missed everything good.

But to me, she did fantastic. She only needed one small reminder, seemed like a win to me.

The negativity bias can creep into your life and will narrow your vision so you only see what’s not going well instead of all the things that are.

When you step back you can see that’s just a story you’re telling yourself and a fraction of the actual story.

Just like my student, we all need a reminder sometimes about how we’re looking at ourselves, and what we’re choosing to see.

I couldn’t let this one pass without giving it a spot on the grid.

Parker qualified for the state meet in discus this year. She was one of only 16 kids.

For someone who had never thrown before freshman year, that’s a long way to come.

But the state meet didn’t go the way she hoped.

She went out of bounds on her first two throws.

I know this kid well enough to know that after the first one, she was already in her head. And after the second, I could see how upset she was.

But she didn’t break down and she didn’t give up.

She took the adjustments her coach gave her, walked back into that ring, and threw it in bounds.

Twice.

And that’s exactly what I’ll remember about that meet.

Most people don’t quit all at once.

They quit in the small moments when no one would blame them.

She didn’t.

I wish I could fully explain what happens on our retreats. Words don’t quite do it justice. You have to be there.

But I’ll try.

We start with an opening practice. People feel a little nervous and aren’t sure what to expect. Often, they’re meeting each other and us for the first time.

By the end of that first session, something has already shifted. There’s a little more lightness and less awkwardness.

From there, we move through the days together. Morning and afternoon yoga, pranayama, and meditation.

We eat three meals a day around the same table. There are group excursions, beach days, hikes, wandering through villages, and meeting locals.

And somewhere in all of it, without anyone planning for it, people stop being strangers.

By the last morning, there are hugs that linger. Sometimes tears. And the same group that started out a little awkward ends up feeling like something closer to family.

This trip to Costa Rica was all of that.

I know I speak for when I say we could not be more grateful to the group for being so open and curious.

A few of them were doing yoga for the first time and showed up to every single session. They all left with practices that they can return to on a daily basis.

We could not have asked for a better group.

We have some incredible retreats coming in 2027 and we would love for you to be part of the next one. Link in bio. šŸ’™

I had an encounter this week that left me feeling a little off.

Whenever that happens, I take some time to look at my own role in it. I do this so I can stay open to the ways I’m still growing and keep showing up as the person I want to be.

This interaction uncovered a pattern I’ve carried since childhood. One that keeps showing up. And it gave me the chance to choose to let it go and update my operating system.

Which brought me to a conversation with a client on Monday.

She was feeling bad because we were revisiting a pattern we’d worked on before. She asked if I ever have to do the same in my own life.

I told her: we’re all works in progress.

Some patterns are stronger than others and need to be revisited more than once.

That doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.

That’s actually the beauty of it. We get to keep choosing how we want to show up, and whether we want to do the work. šŸ’™
