Step 6 is the last one — and it's the only step where you don't have to do anything at all.

Five steps of appointments, phone calls, questionnaires and decisions. Then the authorization comes through and the work shifts entirely to us.

Once we receive your authorization:

✓ We contact you immediately
✓ We assign your caregiver
✓ We start services quickly

Services typically begin within 3–7 days of approval.

That's the whole step. No forms to fill out, no office to visit, no follow-up call you need to remember to make. The next thing that happens is a phone call from us, and then a scheduled first visit.

If you've made it to Step 5 and chosen your provider, the hard part is behind you. Most Veterans are surprised how quickly the last stretch moves once the paperwork clears.

And if a week passes after your approval with no call from your agency, that's worth a follow-up, usually it means the authorization hasn't landed with them yet.

Seven things to check in your own home this weekend. Most take an afternoon and cost under $50.

Aging in place isn't only about care, it's about whether the house cooperates. Most falls happen in rooms people have walked through ten thousand times.

Walk through with fresh eyes:

☐ Grab bars beside the toilet and inside the shower or tub
☐ Non-slip mats in the bathroom and kitchen
☐ Loose rugs removed or secured to the floor
☐ Walkways and stairs clear of cords, boxes, and clutter
☐ Night lights in the hallway, bathroom, and bedroom
☐ Sturdy handrails on both sides of every staircase
☐ Everyday items stored between waist and shoulder height

That last one gets overlooked constantly. Anything that requires a step stool or a deep bend is a daily risk, and moving a stack of plates down one shelf costs nothing.

If you checked more boxes than you expected, or if you're doing this walk-through for a parent who insists everything is fine that's a good conversation to bring to a VA social worker. Home safety concerns are part of what an assessment looks at.

Under 21 and enrolled in Georgia Medicaid
Medically fragile with ongoing daily care needs
Currently receiving physician-ordered services
Needs skilled nursing, personal care support, or both
Daily needs go well beyond what a same-age child requires

Checked three or more? That is worth a phone call.

Two things families get wrong here. The first is assuming a specific diagnosis is the deciding factor, it is not. Medical necessity is. The second is ruling themselves out because their child is not on a ventilator. GAPP covers personal care support as well as skilled nursing, and the personal care side reaches far more families than most people realize.

You are not asking anyone for a favor by finding out. Eligibility is a standard, and either your child meets it or they do not.

The VA hands you a list of home care agencies. Most Veterans don't realize that list is a choice.

Step 5 of the VA home care process is where you pick your provider, and it's the one step in this entire process that belongs entirely to you.

Here's what you should know before that moment arrives:

→ You will receive a list of approved agencies.
→ You are not required to accept the first one offered.
→ You can request your provider by name.

Most people treat the list like an assignment because nobody tells them otherwise. They take the first name, hope for the best, and find out later that a different agency would have been a better fit for their schedule, their location, or their needs.

Decide before the call. Ask around. Look up who serves your county. Then give your VA team the exact provider details, name, NPI, fax,so the request goes through clean the first time.

Choosing takes thirty seconds. Being placed with the wrong agency can take months to fix.

Gratitude isn't a parade. Most days it's a hot meal, a steady arm, and someone showing up on Tuesday morning.

We say "thank you for your service" once a year. Caregiving is what it looks like the other 364 days.

A blanket adjusted over stiff knees. A bathroom trip made safely instead of alone at 2am. Groceries put away where they can be reached without a step stool. A clean kitchen. A familiar face at the door who remembers how you take your coffee and which stories you like to tell twice.

None of that is charity. VA Homemaker and Home Health Aide services exist because Veterans who served should be able to stay in their own homes, in their own chairs, on their own streets, surrounded by their own photographs.

To every family caregiver reading this at the end of a long day: you are doing the work. And you don't have to do all of it.

Step 5 of the GAPP process: work with your child's doctor.

This is the step everything else rests on. A request is only as strong as what the physician has written down.

Before that appointment, prepare for it like it matters, because it does:

Ask for current orders and a letter of medical necessity, by name.
Make sure your child's daily care needs are in the chart, not just their diagnoses. A diagnosis code says what your child has. It does not say that meals take 45 minutes with full positioning support.

Get equipment, feeding, mobility, and supervision needs documented specifically.
Confirm the office knows exactly where to send everything and who to send it to.

Physicians are not withholding anything from you. They are writing what they have been told, in the time they have. The families who get thorough documentation are usually the ones who arrived with notes.

Bring the notes. You know the day better than anyone in that room.

It is 4:40 in the morning and you are awake again.

Not because anything went wrong. Because something might. Because you have learned to sleep with one ear open, and now you cannot unlearn it.

Nobody trained you for this. You became a nurse, a scheduler, an advocate, a records clerk, and a night shift, usually in the same week, and most days nobody notices because you make it look manageable.

In-home care through the Georgia Pediatric Program exists partly for your child and partly for this: so that a parent can sleep, work, sit with their other kids, or take a shower without listening for a sound.

Asking for help is not stepping back from your child. It is making sure you are still standing in ten years, when they still need you.

There's a version of this conversation where someone brings up the fear first and then argues against it. Let's skip that. Here is what the VA Homemaker and Home Health Aide program actually is.

✓ VA describes these services as part of an alternative to nursing home care.
✓ They help Veterans remain living in their own homes, and they serve Veterans of any age, not only older Veterans.
✓ You can continue receiving an aide's services for as long as you need extra help with daily activities.

That's the entire design of the program. Not a step toward institutional care. A structure built specifically to delay or avoid it.

The Veterans who benefit most are usually the ones who ask early, while the help needed is still "a few hours a week with meals and housekeeping" rather than something more. Waiting until after a fall means the conversation starts in a hospital discharge planning meeting instead of at your own kitchen table.

Not knowing how long something takes is its own kind of stress. So here is the VA home care process laid out end to end.

🗓 P*P appointment — 1 to 7 days
You need a VA Primary Care Physician, because the VA doctor submits the referral.

📄 Referral processing — same day to 3 days
Ask for a "Home Care / Homemaker Services Referral."

📞 VA assessment call — within 72 hours
The VA Homemaker / Community Care Team calls to ask where you need assistance.

🏠 Services begin — 3 to 7 days after approval
Provider assigned, caregiver matched, first visit scheduled.

Add it up and most Veterans move from first appointment to first visit in a matter of weeks, not months. The clock only starts when you ask.

MYTH: Only an outside caregiver can be paid to care for your child.

FACT: Through GAPP's Family Caregiver Option, a legally responsible adult who lives with the child may be hired, trained, and paid for personal care support hours.

That is a real pathway, not a rumor circulating in a Facebook group. It applies to parents and legal guardians living in the home.

The qualifiers matter as much as the fact:

Personal care support only, skilled nursing and behavioral aide hours are not included.
Your child must already qualify for GAPP.
You become an agency employee, with the training and background check that comes with it.
Foster parents are not eligible under current GAPP rules.

If someone told you flatly that Georgia will never pay a parent, they were working from older information. If someone told you it is automatic, they oversold it.

The truth sits in between, and it is worth ten minutes of your time to find out where your family lands.
