1️⃣ Are you enrolled in VA health care?
All enrolled Veterans are eligible if they meet the clinical need.

2️⃣ Do you need assistance with daily activities?
Bathing, dressing, meals, mobility, medication reminders, housekeeping. Some is enough.

3️⃣ Do you have a VA Primary Care Physician?
Your VA doctor submits the referral.

Three yeses means it's worth asking. Your VA care team makes the clinical call — not you, from a website.

3. Level and type of support required is evaluated
4. A determination is mailed to your family

Not a scoring formula. A person reading what was written down. Specific beats general.

She still prunes her own trees. That's the whole point of home care, and most people get it backwards.

There's an assumption that accepting help at home is the beginning of losing your independence. In practice it's usually what protects it.

She still decides what's for dinner and when the lights go off. She still knows where everything in the kitchen belongs and gets irritated when it isn't there. She still spends Sunday mornings on a bonsai she's been shaping for eleven years.

What changed is that someone else now carries the laundry downstairs and makes sure the bathroom floor is dry.

That's the trade. A little help with the hardest tasks, so the rest of life stays hers. Not a step toward somewhere else — a way of staying exactly where she is.

VA describes Homemaker and Home Health Aide services as part of an alternative to nursing home care. That framing is worth sitting with, because the choice most families think they're facing usually isn't the choice at all.

Her home. Her routine. Her decisions.
