"A goal without a plan is just a wish" was just one life lesson written about in Antoine De Saint-Exupéry's 1943 book Le Petit Prince. It reminds me of Benjamin Franklin's quote "By failing to plan, you're preparing to fail" but is somewhat more positive and offers a path out of failure.
Here are some tips to help you:
1. Having a goal is half the battle.
• It shows you're not happy with a current situation and want to change.
2. A plan is key to success.
• A goal is a passive thought, it means you're in the "thinking" stage. But put together a plan and you shift into active "doing" stage.
• Decide your non-negotiables each week...these are action points essential to help you acheive your goal that you will not skip. Soon these non-negotiables will become your habits. Print off a calendar and stick it on the fridge, write down when you're going to do these things, cross them off when you've done them.
• Pick a workout program and see it through. You'll get a better workout in if you show up knowing exactly what you're doing vs making it up as you go along. A well thought out program will also factor in all muscle groups are worked and progress you as you improve.
• Don't try and create too many new habits at once, first hurdle and you'll give up on them all.
• Preparation is essential. Pack your gym bag the night before, schedule in some walks with friends vs meeting for coffee, meal prep the night before or on weekends to avoid takeaway on a busy weeknight.
• Look ahead - participating potential challenges will help you process the negative emotions that come with stress and make us instantly throw in the towel!
• Set yourself some smaller goals along the way so you remember to celebrate how far you've already come.
So what goals are you working on right now? What habits have you found that have really helped you? And what movement are you getting in today to help you achieve your goals?
