Why "treat them like family" isn't always the best advice in healthcare. π
When discussing respect and dignity for residents, Brent Moss has a highly realistic and unique take.
He jokes that he explicitly doesn't tell his staff to treat patients like their own mothers, simply because some people don't treat their own families well! His approach is much more effective: apply the Golden Rule. You have to treat residents how you would want yourself or your loved ones to be treated. If a patient asks for something simple and a caregiver refuses, that is not providing respect or dignity.
