Want to help your child build bigger sentences? Try the ‘Plus One’ rule! When expanding language, we meet children exactly where they are and show them the very next step. If your child points and says ‘Car,’ you repeat it and add one word: ‘Blue car!’ If they say ‘Go,’ you expand it to ‘Go fast!’

By repeating their words and adding just one more, you naturally model the next developmental milestone without overwhelming them.

You can’t just stop a behavior without teaching a new one—otherwise, you leave a ‘behavioral vacuum.’ If a child hits because they need a break, simply saying ‘stop hitting’ doesn’t solve their underlying problem: they still need that break!

That’s why we teach a Replacement Behavior—like signing for ‘break’ or saying ‘help.’ By giving them a communication tool that is easier and more effective than hitting, we empower them to meet their needs peacefully.
