The space between contractions. ✨

It can be a time to close your eyes, to listen to your partner’s encouraging words, to doze off, to feel a cool cloth on your skin, to whisper an affirmation to yourself.

When you give birth with our midwives, there’s no one watching a screen, telling you when a surge is coming. You can just rest in between and feel the next wave start to crest.

We talk a lot about the importance of hydration when you’re pregnant, but it’s also crucial to keep up your fluid intake during and after labor.

Staying hydrated helps with your body’s physical recovery, regulates your mood and energy level, and aids digestive health. Plus, it supports breast milk production.

If you like coconut water, this is a great choice during the immediate postpartum recovery time because it contains electrolytes like potassium and magnesium.

When you choose water birth, your partner can be in the pool with you. 💦

This means they can provide any type of support you desire—holding your hand, rubbing your back, squeezing your hips. Or maybe it’s verbal encouragement spoken into your ear. Whatever you need from your partner, they can be close by. 💕

Happy Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer! ☀️

During pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations, along with increased blood volume and cardiovascular output, cause you to feel warmer in any season. lt’s no surprise, then, that summer heat can be challenging for expectant parents. 🥵

According to the CDC, symptoms of overheating include warm skin, headache, dizziness, muscle cramps, and nausea. When body temperature goes above 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit, there is an increased risk for dehydration, which can cause Braxton Hicks contractions, dizzy spells, and fainting.

Overheating can also lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes like premature birth, low birth weight, stillbirth, congenital heart defects, and congenital disabilities.

When you’re pregnant, staying cool isn't just about comfort. It's really about health and safety. Here are 5️⃣ tips for managing the heat during pregnancy.

💦 Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

👚 Wear loose-fitting clothing

🌅 Limit time outdoors to the cooler parts of the day, like morning and evening

🌴 Stay in the shade if you can when you’re outside

🏡 Retreat to a cooler place and apply a wet cloth to your skin

What are YOUR tips for coping with heat during pregnancy?

Who will be at your birth?

From the ABC team, you’ll have a midwife and nurse.

For your support people, you get to choose! Most birthing parents include their partner, and many hire a doula.

You can also invite your mom, your sister, a friend, or another loved one. Here’s something to keep in mind: Anyone you decide to bring into your birth space carries their energy, too. Consider whether their presence calms and supports you.

Finally, you can also invite your older child or children to be with you. In this case, we ask that there’s an adult designated to stay with them during labor.

Let’s talk about early labor. This is when the cervix opens to about 3-4 centimeters.

During this time, most birthing parents experience contractions in a regular pattern. Because these early surges feel manageable—you’ll be able to talk and walk through them—some expectant parents try to move things along by walking, lunging, or squatting.

However, being exhausted is a major birth plan disruptor. Unless there’s a medical reason to speed up your labor, it’s best to rest during early labor. You’ll need your energy when active labor and transition come, and the contractions become much more intense.
