Kinemo was developed with flexibility in mind, which means our sensors can be placed virtually anywhere. Depending on the user’s abilities, it can be worn on the eyebrow, shoulder, or even the foot to create an access method that’s customized to them.

By adapting to each individual’s available movement, Kinemo helps people access communication and technology in a way that supports greater independence and participation in everyday life.

Thank you to the The ALS Association for hosting us at ALS Nexus this year!

We’re grateful to have had the opportunity to connect with people living with ALS, caregivers, clinicians, and advocates who are working every day to improve access, independence, and quality of life.

As ALS progresses, changes in mobility can make everyday technology harder to use. Kinemo is designed to adapt with those changes, helping people continue to access their digital devices hands-free and with greater independence.

Come meet Kinemo at in Orlando, Florida, from August 23-26!

We’ll be exhibiting at Booth 300, where you can try our hands-free alternative controllers and learn how Kinemo is helping individuals living with ALS access technology more independently.

Our devices will also be available in the AccessAbility space. The space features an immersive educational environment with interactive home settings where attendees can experience how adaptive tools, devices, and assistive technologies can make everyday living spaces more accessible.

A lot has changed since our early prototypes: from a bulky piece of headgear, to (still bulky) smart glasses, to finally an iteration of Kinemo we’re proud of. Each version helped us learn what worked and what needed improvement, all leading to a device that’s now more practical, accessible, and customizable.

We’ve managed to make Kinemo a compact, modular, and wearable system that makes digital access easier for people with limited mobility, using virtually any part of the body as an input controller. What makes an assistive technology like Kinemo unique?

Last week we had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Josh Anderson from the Easterseals Crossroads INDATA Project and join him on the Assistive Technology Update podcast, where we shared how Kinemo is approaching hands-free access to technology.

For individuals with limited hand function due to a disability, Kinemo lets people use any remaining movement they have to control technology. With small wearable motion sensors, our devices translate body gestures into digital inputs, from moving a cursor with head movement to clicking with a shoulder shrug or facial gesture.

In this podcast, we discuss Kinemo One, a single-sensor wearable that replaces traditional switches, and Kinemo Connect, our flagship multi-body controller for advanced device interactions. Both are designed to adapt to an individual, recognizing that no two conditions or movement patterns are the same.

We’re so lucky to work with incredible clinicians whose mission is to find the best solutions for their patients, and Anna Ware is no exception. Her dedication to finding a way for her stroke patient to access technology is inspiring, and we’re happy to be part of their journey.

Here’s what Anna had to say after successfully trialing Kinemo Connect with her client.

“Kinemo has been nothing short of transformative for my partially locked-in client, who has movement only from his left elbow down. For the first time since his debilitating stroke, my client was able to move a cursor and interact with buttons on a tablet. Placed on his hand, the Kinemo translates subtle wrist movements into cursor control, with thumb motion serving as a left click. This is a setup that has not been possible with any other device because we have tried them all. No other mouse could have been so precisely tailored to his available range of motion, his limited endurance, and his unique positioning needs.

“Those of us in this field know there is no universal solution for complex access needs. But Kinemo offers something genuinely different: a flexible, personalized approach that meets people within their abilities. The ability to make the smallest, most precise adjustments makes all the difference for clients like mine.

“Today, my client is working toward goals that felt out of reach just months ago. He is working on using AAC, writing, messaging loved ones, and reclaiming the independence he had been without for years. He can now share his story, put his thoughts into words, and connect with the people he loves because Kinemo made it possible.”

If you could only move your foot, how would you communicate? That’s the challenge Jessie Stavrou, SLP at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation in Pennsylvania, was trying to solve for her patient.

With only limited foot movement, her patient struggled to use existing switch technology to access her communication tablet until Jessie suggested trialing Kinemo as a wearable, zero-force switch option.

“The patient came in today and had a very successful session with use of the Kinemo One at her foot to access her communication tablet. The family reports good success at home with use of the device.”

Here’s what Jessie had to say regarding her overall experience with Kinemo.

“Our team had been trying to find a switch access method for a complex traumatic brain injury patient for many months. Once we received the Kinemo One, we were able to get it connected and the patient communicating within minutes. The Kinemo One was lightweight, can be mounted anywhere, and readily connected to her existing communication device. Now she can use her device to independently participate in family activities and request what she wants and needs. The team and the family appreciated all the support from Kinemo to meet her needs.”

6 years ago we made our first prototype, and it wasn’t pretty.

Back in 2020, we developed a controller for individuals with severe paralysis to be able to control technology. By tracking both head and tongue movement using a magnet and several sensors around the head, users could control their smartphone or power wheelchair.

The device was clunky and hard to use, but it helped to validate a real need for a wearable hands-free controller for individuals living with complex physical disabilities.

So we ditched tongue control and instead focused on allowing any part of the body to be used for control, like the eyebrow, cheek, or jaw. And that’s where our small sensors, known as tracers, were born.

Over the years, we worked with countless users and went through dozens of prototypes until we finally landed on a device that ticked all the boxes: a highly modular, customizable, and adaptive controller that can transform any visible body motion into digital device controls.

Today, Kinemo is helping individuals with mobility impairment be more independent by offering a new way to access their digital devices. We’re still listening to users, still incorporating feedback, and still iterating our devices, so our journey is far from done, but we couldn’t be prouder of our progress thus far.
