As physicians, we know that protecting children’s health extends beyond the exam room. Clean air is essential to healthy lungs, healthy development, and healthy communities.
Across Georgia, rising temperatures, worsening air quality, and longer allergy seasons are affecting the health of our youngest patients. Children are especially vulnerable because their lungs and bodies are still developing.

When we think about protecting our children, we often focus on healthy meals, wearing bicycle helmets, and quality education. But another important factor affects their well-being every day: the air they breathe and the changing climate around them.
Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane trap heat in our atmosphere, driving climate change. As temperatures rise, communities experience more extreme heat, worsening air quality, longer allergy seasons, and stronger storms.
These climate-related changes can have serious health impacts, especially for children. Their lungs and bodies are still developing, making them more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, respiratory problems, and other environmental health risks.
