What if âresistanceâ is actually communication?
At the beginning of every group I facilitate, I make something very clear:
Everything I offer is an invitation. You always have a choice.
â You can participate.
â You can observe.
â You can modify something.
â You can sit this one out.
That isnât because participation doesnât matter.
Itâs because, from a trauma-informed perspective, choice matters enormously.
For many people with histories of trauma, having choice taken awayâor feeling pressured, controlled, cornered, or forcedâcan itself activate the nervous system.
đ§ So when someone...
đĽ doesnât make eye contact
đĽ jokes through an exercise
đĽ says âthis is weirdâ
đĽ refuses to participate
đĽ or simply lies down and sleeps
I try not to immediately label that behavior as resistance.
Instead, I get curious.
