Announcing TOXCON Nepal 2026! HAPSA (HAPSA) and Dhulikhel Hospital (Dhulikhel Hospital) are bringing together clinicians, toxicologists, researchers, and trainees from Nepal and around the world to strengthen clinical toxicology and poison information services in Nepal.

Location: Dhulikhel Hospital
Date: December 15–16, 2026

Day 1: Hands-on, case-based clinical toxicology training
Day 2: Scientific conference + research presentations + discussion on building Nepal’s poison information infrastructure

Ādmī ko bhī mayassar nahīñ insāñ honā 🙏

One of the most important parts of who I am today came from studying Urdu at The University of Texas at Austin in undergrad. Urdu gave me Ghalib, Faiz, and so many others, and it taught me to sit with ambiguity, to listen for what is not being said, and to understand that words can carry entire worlds of history, suffering, love, and hope. Those lessons have stayed with me in medicine, in my work in Nepal, and in how I try to understand people. I am grateful to the Hindi Urdu Flagship program and especially mentor and professor Akbar Hyder for giving me something that continues to shape my life nearly two decades later. I was happy to share my reflection the on South Asia Institute’s recent newsletter. While the news cycle might be not covering Nepal elsewhere, in Rhode Island, local efforts are ongoing. Thanks NBC 10 WJAR Providence New Bedford and Coastal ABC for your coverage, and thanks to local Rhode Islanders for continuing to organize. Special shoutout to India Restaurant for their effort as well. It’s not just about the money, the solidarity, the camaraderie and having each others back matters quite a bit. What did the PM say? Beyond the viral clips, the glasses, and everything else, PM Balen’s ’s UN message was about a clear that Nepal is ready to lead and guide the world in climate. It was about climate justice, preparedness, and Nepal’s call for Himalayan cooperation.

I had an opportunity this week in Cape Town, South Africa to talk about Nepal’s recent floods and climate justice with implementation science researchers from around the world.

The relief work after a disaster matters. And so does what happens before the next one: strengthening community responders, building early-warning systems people can act on, investing in resilient systems, and learning from each response so we are better prepared the next time.

And Nepal’s story is bigger than Nepal. As Nepal takes this message to the global stage, we need a multi-pronged approach and a much stronger conversation about climate justice. Grateful to HIGH-IRI and AFRI-IRI for giving me the space to share what we are learning from the field.

We saw this mother’s pain because someone recorded it. Across rural Nepal, similar struggles happen every day, far from cameras and public attention.

Whatever the investigation finds , no woman should ever have to give birth outside a hospital if they don’t want to. And healthcare (especially emergency health care) must serve every Nepali: rich or poor, rural or urban, connected or forgotten. The healthcare system must care for everyone across the country.
