Marionette lines get their name from — you guessed it — marionette puppets. Those hinged lines that run from the corners of the puppet's mouth to the chin. Not the most flattering comparison, but it is accurate.
So what's actually going on? It's a combination of things happening at once. Over time, you lose volume in your mid-face and cheeks, which means the tissue that was once supported starts to descend. The skin loses elasticity and collagen. And that overactive DAO muscle we talked about in our Resting Bliss Face series? It's pulling the corners of your mouth down, which deepens the creases even further.
The result is a shadow or fold that runs from the mouth to the chin, creating that heavy, downturned look in the lower face.
Treatment depends on what's driving your specific lines. For some people, a dermal filler like Restylane Defyne or RHA 3 placed directly into the fold restores lost volume and softens the crease. For others, neurotoxin in the DAO muscle reduces the downward pull that's contributing to the depth. And in many cases, the best results come from combining both — addressing the pull and the volume loss together.
Your injector will assess your anatomy and recommend the right approach for your face. There's no one-size-fits-all here, and that's the whole point.
