Gallup's 2026 data shows global engagement has fallen for the second consecutive year — and this time, they name the culprit directly: managers.

Manager engagement dropped 5 points in a single year. From 27% to 22%.

The "engagement premium" that used to make management roles more motivating than individual contributor roles? It's gone. Managers are now only as engaged as the people they lead.

And because 70% of team engagement variance comes down to the direct manager, the whole floor drops with them.

$10 trillion in lost productivity globally. 9% of world GDP. That's the cost of looking at the wrong number.

Here's what makes this solvable: Gallup also found that best-practice organizations hit 79% manager engagement — nearly 4× the global average. The gap isn't geography or industry. It's whether leadership treats manager wellbeing as a lever or an afterthought.
