The PA History Society is sad to announce the passing of Rev. Wendell Wharton, Jr. on August 18th. Rev. Wharton was a founding memeber of the PA History Society and a former editor of our newsletter. He was the first African American to be an AAPA House officer, a founder and the first president of the African Heritage Caucus, and a PA educator who touched the lives of countless students.

In addition to Susan Bonfiglio's fascinating work as a PA in the Public Health Service, she has served on advisory boards for immunizations and vaccination-related reimbursement policies, helped establish rural primary care tracks for the University of Colorado, and participated in statewide initiatives to improve scope-of-practice regulations. She has also contributed to disease containment protocols in correctional facilities, developed strategies to reduce MRSA infection rates, and led programs to improve care for seniors with chronic conditions. The History Society is sad to announce the passing of Jack Liskin, MA, PA. Mr. Liskin was a longtime educator at the University of Southern California - he was the first PA to hold the positions of assistant program director and then program director at the University. While with USC he intiated a program to increase the number of PA students from underrepresented backgrounds. He was a mentor to Karen Bass, a former student of his and the first PA elected the US Congress.

Mr. Liskin was a former president of the California Academy of PAs. He was instrumental in revamping California's PA regulations, which at the time allowed only a limited “laundry list” of PA tasks, into a more comprehensive role for PA practice.

Over the course of nearly five decades in medicine, Nadya Dimitrov has helped shape how PAs care for patients facing serious and life-limiting illness. She helped build surgical PA training programs in New York City hospitals and was a founding member and leader of Physician Associates in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, among many other acheivements.
