BE SMART. STAY STRONG. LIVE WELL.

While there's no sure-fire way to prevent or cure dementia, research shows that your daily habits can play a powerful role in protecting your brain. From staying active and eating well to getting quality sleep and fostering social connections, small lifestyle changes can help slow cognitive decline and promote mental sharpness.

EXERCISE

Exercise offers an impressive array of health benefits. Not only does staying physically active help your brain, but it also helps lower your risk of these conditions:

heart disease
type 2 diabetes
high blood pressure
colon cancer
breast cancer.
Exercise also helps relieve insomnia, anxiety, and depression. In addition, it may help ward off cognitive decline and dementia.

Some studies have shown that engaging in a program of regular exercise improves cognitive function in people with memory problems. Exercise may be particularly advantageous for people who carry the APOE4 gene variant, which makes people more susceptible to Alzheimer's.

A MEDITERRANEAN STYLE DIET

This eating pattern has long been recognized as promoting better cardiovascular health, lowering the risk of certain cancers, and may protect against cognitive decline. A Mediterranean diet also appears to lower the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment and slow the progression to dementia in people who have the condition.

A Mediterranean diet emphasizes:

fruits
vegetables
whole grains
beans
nuts and seeds
olive oil,
fish, poultry, and dairy products.
Alcohol

Studies show a link between regular consumption of more than moderate use of alcohol and a 22% higher Alzheimer's risk compared to nondrinkers. For many years, moderate alcohol use has been defined as having no more than seven drinks per week for women and 14 drinks per week for men.

However, many experts are now questioning whether moderate drinking should mean even lower amounts.

SLEEP

Our bodies rely on a certain amount of regular sleep for a variety of essential functions, many of them in the brain. Studies have shown that people who regularly sleep less than the recommended seven to eight hours a night score lower on tests of mental function. This may be because learning and memories are consolidated during sleep.

MENTAL STIMULATION

Staying mentally active as you age is important to brain health. One study found that mentally intact people in their 70s and 80s who engaged the most with mentally stimulating activities such as reading, writing, crossword puzzles, playing board or card games, engaging in group discussions, or playing music were half as likely to develop mild cognitive impairment as those who reported the least amount of participation.

SOCIAL CONNECTIONS

Research shows that people with strong social ties are less likely to experience cognitive declines than those who are alone.

Social activities require you to engage several important mental processes, including attention and memory, which can bolster cognition. Frequent engagement helps strengthen neural networks, slowing normal age-related declines. It may also help strengthen cognitive reserve, which can delay the onset of dementia.

In addition, having a strong network of people who support and care for you can help lower your stress levels. By contrast, depression, which often goes hand in hand with loneliness, correlates to faster cognitive decline.

Just because your total cholesterol is high, does not mean you automatically need a statin, but it certainly does mean you need to make some changes! If you’re looking at the numbers, make sure you look at all the numbers before you decide next steps.

A good evaluation of high cholesterol should consider:

* LDL cholesterol level
* ApoB (if available)
* Triglycerides
* HDL cholesterol
* Family history
* Blood pressure
* Blood sugar and insulin resistance
* Thyroid function
* Weight and waist circumference
* Fatty liver status
* Overall cardiovascular risk

A word about ApoB
Apolipoprotein 😎 is a protein found on the surface of the cholesterol-carrying particles that can contribute to plaque buildup in your arteries.

Each LDL particle has one ApoB molecule, so an ApoB test is essentially a count of the number of atherosclerosis-causing particles in your blood.

Why does ApoB matter? Two people can have the same LDL cholesterol level but very different numbers of LDL particles. That’s why it matters! It’s likely not tested unless you ask for it and even then you may have to pay for it, which is ridiculous.

For MOST people, improving diet, losing weight, exercising, and treating fatty liver dramatically improves cholesterol.

For OTHERS—especially those with strong genetic risk—lifestyle changes alone may not be enough, and statins can be considered carefully to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Americans are far less healthy than they could be. Six out of every 10 live with at least one chronic disease, according to the CDC. Four in 10 people have two or more conditions. Chronic conditions like heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes exact a heavy toll on our collective health, productivity, and longevity!!

Researchers from Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health analyzed data from the CDC and two long-term population studies-the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. They found that people who practiced five specific lifestyle habits dramatically reduced their risks of heart disease and cancer, compared with those who did none of these things.

I love my hummus, but I make my own from chickpeas that are organic and a non-BPA containers. If you are more the Soozie homemaker type buy organic chickpeas and soak them yourself - easy to do and bonus tip - if you peel your chickpeas, the hummus is so much more smooth, but (full disclosure) I typically don’t do that. 😝

Chickpeas are susceptible to pesticide residues, most notably glyphosate (the chemical in Roundup). Conventional farmers frequently spray this herbicide immediately before harvest to dry out the crops (desiccation). This practice leaves trace amounts of pesticide residues on dry chickpeas and in processed products like hummus.

Health & Safety Concerns
Detection: Independent tests by groups like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) have found detectable levels of glyphosate in over 80% of conventional (non-organic) chickpea and hummus samples.Regulation: Limits are allowed. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permits a tolerance of 8.0 parts per million (ppm), and the European Union sets its limit at 10.0 ppm for chickpeas.

Choose Organic: While not foolproof, organic certification standards strictly prohibit the deliberate spraying of synthetic pesticides like glyphosate.
