Strong Birth Journeys

Strong Birth Journeys Birth and Post Partum Doula serving the CSRA. I am honored to be serving Augusta and the greater CSRA as a birth and postpartum doula.

I am a DONA trained birth doula and will have my DONA certification completed in the near future. As a mother of two children myself, I believe that birth is truly a transformative experience and that all women deserve and can benefit from the presence of a trained female birth companion. It is my hope that all women can come to see birth as something to be anticipated with confidence, not somethi

ng to be feared. As your birth doula, I will help provide resources and information regarding birth options, so that you can make informed decisions as to what is best for YOUR family. It is my desire to emotionally and physically support you and your partner through the birth process, whether that be unmedicated, medicated, or C-section. Each mother should have the opportunity to feel empowered throughout her pregnancy, labor, and postpartum period. Once you have welcomed your new baby, you may need help with daily tasks so that you can recover from birth more easily and spend important time bonding with your baby. As a postpartum doula, I can offer breastfeeding support, run errands, perform light housework and cooking, and watch your baby or older children so that you can get the rest you need. My hope and goal is that you will truly feel that you experienced a strong beginning in your new life as a family. Dolly went through one of the deepest struggles women face, and still opened her heart to all of us. She will be forever missed. 😭💕

We were so sorry to hear of Dolly Parton’s passing. An icon in every sense of the word, her impact on music, culture, philanthropy, and generations of people is immeasurable.

Dolly was also open about her struggle with endometriosis, undergoing a hysterectomy, and not being able to have children despite once deeply wanting them.

Her words are a beautiful reminder that grief and a full, meaningful life can exist together, and that there are so many ways to nurture, love, and leave a legacy.

One of the biggest misconceptions about breastfeeding is that the hospital lactation consultant is going to “teach you how to breastfeed” before you go home

And I need parents to understand this with love and honesty:
Most hospital lactation consultants simply do not have enough time 😞

Not because they don’t care
Not because they aren’t skilled
But because hospital systems are stretched thin

One lactation consultant may be covering:
• Multiple postpartum floors
• NICU
• New admissions
• Discharges
• Pumps and paperwork
• Babies with medical complications
• Moms recovering from surgery
• Charting and insurance requirements

Meanwhile you’re 24 hours postpartum, exhausted, bleeding, learning a brand new human… and someone pops in for 12 minutes while your baby is asleep 😅

Breastfeeding is not a one-time lesson
It is a learned relationship that unfolds over days and weeks

The hospital is often just:
✨ “Here’s how to latch”
✨ “Baby has jaundice start supplementing”
✨ “Baby lost too much weight start pumping”

And then parents go home thinking:
“Why does this suddenly feel impossible?”

Because the real challenges often start AFTER discharge:
• Milk coming in
• Engorgement
• Cluster feeding
• Ni**le pain
• Pumping
• Bottle refusal
• Oversupply
• Low supply worries
• Weight gain concerns
• Sleep deprivation
• Learning your actual baby

This is why postpartum lactation support matters so much 💛

Here’s what I wish every family knew:
• Take a prenatal breastfeeding class BEFORE birth
• Follow evidence-based lactation accounts during pregnancy
• Have a lactation consultant lined up before delivery if possible
• Don’t wait until things are “bad enough” to ask for help
• One good postpartum visit can change your entire experience

And if breastfeeding felt harder than you expected after leaving the hospital?
You did not fail a class everyone else passed

You were discharged from a major medical event while learning one of the most biologically complex things humans do

That deserves support

I love this so much!

📱 A Digital Misfit

A wrong number turned into something worth telling for years. Mark Knox meant to text his family a birth announcement about his newborn son, Cason, but he typed one wrong digit. The message and photo landed on the phone of a stranger named Deorick Lashun. Instead of ignoring it or firing back a quick "wrong number," Deorick got excited and decided to celebrate with a family he'd never met.

🎁 An Unexpected Visit

Deorick and his brother, Dennis, didn't stop at a text back. They drove to the hospital to congratulate the couple in person, showing up at the maternity ward with gifts while the new parents were still adjusting to life with their baby. The brothers brought:
* Multiple packages of diapers
* Baby wipes
* New baby clothes
A typo turned into a moment that spread across social media.

👶 Heartwarming Gratitude

The Knox family froze for a second when two strangers walked into their hospital room. That surprise turned into gratitude fast. Lindsey Knox, the new mother, said she was moved that the brothers gave their time and money to a family they'd never met. Someone snapped a photo of the brothers smiling next to the new parents and their baby, and that picture got shared thousands of times online.

🤝 Meaningful Connections

A typo connected two families who never would have met otherwise. The Lashun brothers' choice to show up struck a chord with millions of people online. They could have dismissed the wrong number. Instead they treated a stranger's joy as their own, and a text message became a memory the Knox family will keep for good.

✨ A Lasting Legacy

People keep sharing this story because it makes them want to do something kind themselves. Most people would have deleted the message or sent back a one-line correction. The Lashun brothers went to a hospital instead, and now Cason has a story his parents will tell him for years. A single wrong digit ended up giving a family and two strangers something they'll all remember.

America can protect a politician’s paycheck during a shutdown, but not every mother’s paycheck after childbirth.

Members of Congress continue receiving their salaries during a federal funding lapse, even while many government workers may be furloughed or required to work without receiving their normal paycheck on schedule.

Meanwhile, the United States still has no federal law guaranteeing paid family and medical leave for private-sector workers.

Eligible employees may receive up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act, but that leave can be completely unpaid.

That means a mother can give birth, recover from a major physical event, care for a newborn, and watch her household income disappear at the exact moment expenses begin piling up.

Hospital bills.

Diapers.

Childcare deposits.

Formula and feeding supplies.

Another person added to the health insurance plan.

Then she’s expected to return to work before she’s physically, mentally, or emotionally ready because the mortgage company doesn’t accept “recovering from childbirth” as payment.

I understand that paid leave has real costs and that small businesses can’t absorb every new mandate without consequences.

But supporting families can’t end with telling people they should have more children.

If we genuinely value motherhood and stable families, recovering from childbirth shouldn’t come with the threat of financial free fall.
