Movement matters in summer, but so does timing. Summer activity planning looks different from fall and winter. ☀️

Children who are active outdoors during peak heat hours (10 am – 4 pm) face a significantly higher risk of overheating, dehydration, and heat-related illness.

How to keep active kids safe and comfortable:
• Shift outdoor time to early morning or early evening when temperatures are lower
• Prioritize shaded play areas during midday hours
• Take regular breaks - especially every 20–30 minutes during sustained activity
• Dress children in light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable fabrics
• Always have water available and encourage sips before, during, and after play
• Watch for early warning signs: heavy breathing, skin that looks red or unusually pale, unusual quietness, or complaints of headache

Children often don't voluntarily slow down when overheated, they need adults to build in the structure.

The goal isn't less activity. It's a smarter activity.

At Valcourt Pediatric Associates, we support families in maintaining healthy, active summers without putting their children at risk.

Keep moving. Keep it smart. 💪

Summer snacking is constant. What's in the bowl matters more when activity levels are high. 🍉

Children who are more active in summer need snacks that fuel movement, support hydration, and stabilize energy, not spike and crash it.

Snacks that do the work:
• Fresh fruit - watermelon, berries, peaches, grapes
• Veggie sticks with hummus - satisfying and nutrient-dense
• String cheese or Greek yogurt - protein to sustain energy
• Whole-grain crackers with nut butter
• Frozen fruit bars made from real juice or pureed fruit
• Cold water-rich options like cucumber or chilled melon slices

What to limit:
• Heavily processed snacks with added sugar that create energy spikes
• Sugary drinks in place of water
• High-sodium packaged snacks that increase dehydration

The snacking rhythm also matters. Children do better with consistent timing, mid-morning and mid-afternoon, rather than grazing continuously.

At Valcourt Pediatric Associates, we encourage families to treat summer nutrition as intentional, not incidental.

Stocked well, snack time becomes a health habit. 🌿

Water is where summer happens. It's also where risks are highest. Every family needs a plan before getting in. 🏊‍♀️

Drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional injury in children, and it can happen silently, quickly, and even in familiar settings.

Non-negotiable water safety rules:
• Designate a Water Watcher, one adult whose only job is watching the children in the water, no phone, no distractions
• Life jackets for young children and non-swimmers, not just floaties
• Never leave children unattended at any water source, including bathtubs, kiddie pools, or drainage areas
• Swim lessons help, but do not replace supervision
• Know where the pool's emergency exits, life rings, and drain covers are
• Teach older children pool rules, no running, no pushing, and how to call for help
• Fence private pools with self-closing, self-latching gates

Supervision is the single most protective factor. No swimming ability, no life jacket, and no rule replaces an attentive adult.

At Valcourt Pediatric Associates, we encourage families to talk through water safety before the first pool day of the season.

Have the conversation now. It only takes a minute. 💙

One serious sunburn in childhood can have long-term effects on skin health. Sun protection starts before they walk out the door. ☀️

Sunscreen isn't the only tool, but it's one of the most important ones. Here's what actually works:

• Use SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum (protects against UVA and UVB)
• Apply 15–30 minutes before going outside, not at the door
• Reapply every 2 hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating
• Don't forget ears, the back of the neck, the tops of feet, and lips
• For infants under 6 months: keep them in shade and use protective clothing; consult your pediatrician before applying sunscreen
• Sunscreen wears off, regardless of SPF, reapplication matters more than the number

Sunscreen works best when it's part of the routine, something children expect, not something that surprises them.

Pair it with hats, UV-protective clothing, and shade during peak hours (10 am – 4 pm).

At Valcourt Pediatric Associates, we encourage sun safety as a daily summer habit, not just a beach-day precaution.

Protect them today. It pays off for decades. 💛

Most mild dehydration can be managed at home. But there are signs that mean it's time to call or come in. 💙

Parents should feel confident distinguishing between manageable and concerning dehydration. Here's how to tell:

Mild to moderate (manage at home):
• Dry mouth and lips
• Less frequent urination
• Low energy or irritability
• Headache after outdoor activity
• Response: offer small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration solution

Seek medical attention when you notice:
• No urination for 8 or more hours
• Sunken eyes or extremely dry eyes
• No tears when crying
• Rapid heart rate or breathing
• Confusion, extreme weakness, or inability to keep fluids down
• Infant with sunken fontanelle (soft spot on head)

For infants and very young children, dehydration can escalate more quickly. When in doubt, call your pediatric provider.

At Valcourt Pediatric Associates, we are here to help you evaluate symptoms, guide home management, and determine when further care is needed.

Trust your instincts. When something doesn't feel right, reach out. 🤝

One size does not fit all when it comes to hydration. 💧

A toddler's daily fluid needs are very different from a 10-year-old's, and a teenager's are different again. Most parents default to intuition, but summer heat changes the baseline significantly.

General daily fluid guidelines by age:
• Toddlers (1–3 yrs): approximately 4 cups per day
• Young children (4–8 yrs): approximately 5 cups per day
• Older kids (9–13 yrs): approximately 7–8 cups per day
• Teens (14+): approximately 8–11 cups per day, more with activity

These numbers go up with outdoor play, sports, heat, and humidity. And they include water from food sources like fruits and vegetables, not just cups consumed.

Summer is when gaps show up fastest, because children are more active and less willing to pause.

At Valcourt Pediatric Associates, we help families understand that hydration is not a one-time conversation. It's a daily practice.

Know your child's baseline. Adjust for the season. 🌞

Water isn't the only source of hydration. On hot summer days, what your child eats matters just as much as what they drink. 🍉

Many fruits and vegetables carry a water content of 85–95%, which means they contribute meaningfully to daily fluid intake, especially for children who resist drinking plain water.

Some of the best hydrating foods for summer:
• Watermelon - over 90% water, naturally sweet
• Cucumber - light, refreshing, easy to snack on
• Strawberries and blueberries - high water content plus antioxidants
• Oranges and peaches - great mid-activity snacks
• Celery and bell peppers - crunchy and cooling

Making these foods accessible, cut, ready, and visible increases how often children reach for them without prompting.

This approach works especially well for children who resist drinking enough water, because they often don't realize they're also getting hydration through food.

At Valcourt Pediatric Associates, we encourage families to think about hydration as a full-day strategy, not just a beverage reminder.

Build it into snacks. Build it into meals. Summer hydration doesn't have to be complicated. 💧

By the time they say they're thirsty, the process has already started. 💧

Dehydration in children doesn't always announce itself clearly. Thirst is actually one of the later signals, which means parents need to look earlier.

Watch for:
• Dry lips or mouth
• Fewer bathroom trips than usual
• Unusual tiredness, irritability, or difficulty focusing
• Darker urine
• Headaches or dizziness after outdoor play

Children are more vulnerable than adults because their bodies have a higher ratio of water to body weight, and they often don't slow down when they should.

Hot days, physical activity, and even excitement can accelerate fluid loss faster than most parents expect.

The goal isn't to wait for signs. It's to stay ahead of them.

At Valcourt Pediatric Associates, we encourage families to build hydration into the rhythm of summer, not just react to it.

Offer water before they ask. Make it part of every break. Start now, before the heat peaks. 🌞

Children don’t learn habits from lectures. They learn from what feels normal.

World No To***co Day isn’t just about avoiding something harmful it’s about helping kids understand what healthy choices look like from the start. 🚭

When children grow up in environments where movement, fresh air, and self-care are part of everyday life, those patterns stay with them. It’s not about explaining long term risks in detail it’s about showing them what feeling good in their body actually means.

Healthy habits are built quietly, through routines, through modeling, through what we prioritize as a family.🌿 💛

At Valcourt Pediatric Associates, we believe prevention starts earlynot with fear, but with awareness and consistency.

Start simple today: talk about what keeps our bodies strong, energized, and healthy. That foundation matters more than any single conversation.

Before the school year ends, there’s something worth pausing for.🌿
Not grades.
Not outcomes.
Growth.
What did they learn beyond academics?
Where did they try, even when it was hard?
How did they change?
Children often move quickly from one phase to the next without recognizing how far they’ve come. Reflection helps them see progress not perfection.
It builds confidence differently.⚡
A quieter, deeper way.
At Valcourt Pediatric Associates, we encourage families to create space for these conversations to shift the focus from results to development.

Ask them one simple question today: “What are you proud of this year?”
You might be surprised by the answer. 🤝
