You became a lactation professional because you know how to listen, assess, educate, reassure, and help families through one of their most vulnerable seasons.

You should not also have to become an expert in payer enrollment, benefit rules, documentation requirements, coding, claims, denials, and reimbursement just to be paid for that work.

But that is what our healthcare system currently asks independent providers to do.

The problem is not that lactation professionals need to work harder.

During the visit, there is assessment, education, care planning, documentation, and deeply relational support.

Afterward, there may still be coding, claim submission, follow-up, payment tracking, and appeals.
The family sees the care.

The lactation professional carries everything around it.
That invisible work is one reason talented professionals become overwhelmed, stop accepting insurance, or leave independent practice altogether.

Black Breastfeeding Week exists because Black families have never been given an equal opportunity to breastfeed.

For generations, Black women’s bodies, milk, labor, and choices have been controlled by someone else... from enslaved women being forced to nurse other people’s children to modern workplaces expecting mothers to return before feeding routines are even established.

Then, when breastfeeding becomes difficult, we treat it like a personal failure.
It isn’t.

Breastfeeding requires time, information, workplace protection, clinical support, community support and access to skilled lactation professionals.

Black families deserve more than encouragement to breastfeed. They deserve the support required to make breastfeeding a real choice.
And the people providing that support deserve systems that recognize their work as healthcare.

Not every essential service fits neatly inside an insurance code. That does not make the care less valuable.

Many Swishvo providers offer highly specialized support that insurance may not fully cover, including water birth preparation, placenta encapsulation, VBAC support, and care designed for higher-weight mothers.

These are not generic services.
They require deep training, lived experience, trust, and a clear understanding of the communities being served. Yet too many providers are forced to explain their value through basic invoices, scattered messages, and one-size-fits-all tools.

Swishvo’s custom proposals help providers clearly present their expertise, care plans, packages, pricing, and next steps in one professional experience.

Because specialized providers should not have to shrink their work to make it easier to sell.
