Today was a very special and heartwarming moment for our resident, Mr. Krenik. He had the opportunity to see his lovely granddaughter dressed in her high school graduation regalia, a milestone that filled him with pride and joy. Being able to share in such an important achievement and celebrate this special chapter in her life created a meaningful memory for both of them. Moments like these remind us of the importance of family, connection, and the lasting bonds that bring happiness to our residents. Congratulations to his granddaughter on her wonderful accomplishment, and thank you for allowing us to be a part of such a memorable day! 🎓❤️

Celebrating SLP month by celebrating our amazing SLPs over here at Onion Creek.

Meet Erin! She’s been an SLP for 4 years all at Ensign!
I first became interested in speech-language pathology in high school through an ASL class, where I learned about the important role SLPs play in supporting individuals with hearing loss and communication disorders. During graduate school, my passion for the field continued to grow as I gained experience with a variety of populations and disorders, especially within the geriatric population. I really enjoy helping patients stay connected, communicate more confidently, and maintain as much independence as possible.

*What’s your favorite part about working with the geriatric population?

My favorite part of working with the geriatric population is building genuine connections with patients while helping them maintain safe swallowing and functional communication skills. I enjoy supporting patients so they can safely eat the foods they love, communicate confidently with family and friends, and continue participating in meaningful daily activities and community outings.

🎤What made you want to become an SLP?
I began my career as a preschool teacher, where I became fascinated by language development and communication. That interest led me to getting my masters in speech therapy so I could better understand the foundations of language and cognition. Throughout graduate school, I loved discovering how broad the field is, from language and memory to swallowing and cognitive communication. I love being able to help people improve their ability to communicate and participate more fully in everyday life! I also love building relationships and interacting with people every day!

🌸What’s your favorite part about working with the geriatric population?
My favorite part of working with the geriatric population is getting to know each individual and hearing about their life experiences, stories, and perspectives. I find their resilience and wisdom inspiring! I also enjoy helping them maintain independence and confidence in their daily activities and communication, so they can continue participating in the things that are meaningful to them!

Celebrating SLP month by celebrating our amazing SLPs over here at Onion Creek.

Meet Lauren . She has been a Speech Therapist for 7 years and working in SNF her entire career.

🎤 What made you want to become an SLP?
I’ve always been drawn to a career where I could make a positive impact in the lives of others. Being able to help patients improve their quality of life and support them through challenges is what makes this field so rewarding to me!

🌸 How do you build trust with residents who are hesitant to participate?
Building trust with hesitant patients starts with meeting them where they are, especially as many are adjusting to major changes in their health, independence, or daily routine. I approach every interaction with patience, empathy, and respect while taking time to learn what matters to each person through listening to their concerns and involving them in the therapy process. When patients feel heard and supported, trust naturally begins to grow!

Celebrating OT month by celebrating our amazing OTs over here at Onion Creek.

Meet Nora. She has been a COTA for 25 years. She has a gentle touch that makes the residents feel calm and capable.

What made you choose OT?
I wanted to do a job where I could help people to help themselves become independent.

If you could only use one piece of equipment forever, what would it be??
I would use two things, TheraBand and TheraPutty. TheraBand is so versatile with different resistance levels for upper/lower body exercises in sitting, standing and lying . TheraPutty is not only good for strengthening fingers and hands, but it can also be calming and reduce anxiety.

This week we’re celebrating Medical Records Week! SJ is our Medical Records coordinator here at Onion Creek Nursing & Rehabilitation. In a nursing home, Medical Records plays a vital role in maintaining accurate and up-to-date resident charts, ensuring compliance with regulations, supporting clinical teams with documentation, and protecting resident information.

SJ comes to work every day giving 100%. She’s always willing to jump in and help, whether that’s assisting with medical supplies or supporting staffing when needed. We truly appreciate everything you do, SJ. You’re the best!

Celebrating OT month by celebrating our amazing OTs over here at Onion Creek.

Meet Ashley! With 16 years of experience as an occupational therapist, she is a dedicated patient advocate who brings both expertise and compassion to her care. Ashley not only supports her patients in reaching their goals but also shares her knowledge to help educate and empower her colleagues.

💜What made you choose OT?
I like to joke that I chose OT because I get to wear scrubs every day 😉, but the truth is I love working with people. I love meeting new patients, getting to know their stories, and helping them through some of the most challenging moments in their lives.

💜How do you explain OT to someone who has no idea what it is?
OT helps patients get back to being themselves again. We work on everyday occupations that matter most. After an injury, those simple things aren’t always simple anymore. OT’s are part therapists, part problem solvers, and part cheerleaders!
