Whether it’s your first travel assignment or your tenth, that “first day of school” feeling never completely disappears.
Walking into an unfamiliar facility can feel intimidating, but a thoughtful approach to your first few shifts can make the transition much smoother:
1. Arrive early: Give yourself time to navigate parking, find your department, and get settled before your shift begins.
2. Make introductions: Connect with your supervisor and the team members you’ll be working alongside. A simple introduction can make it easier to ask for help and begin building trust.
3. Ask questions: Every facility has its own workflows, technology, documentation standards, and equipment. Asking for clarification helps you adapt quickly and work confidently.
4. Learn the layout: Locate the essentials early, from supply rooms and imaging areas to labs, breakrooms, and employee entrances.
5. Give yourself grace: You were hired for your expertise, but learning a new environment still takes time. Be patient with yourself while you find your rhythm.
Every assignment is a fresh start, a chance to expand your experience, build new relationships, and bring your skills to a community that needs them.
