06/19/2026

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States and disproportionately impacts the Black community. According to the CDC, SCD affects approximately 1 in every 365 Black or African American births1. The condition can cause severe pain episodes, organ complications, infections, stroke risk, and other long-term health challenges. 🩸

Despite its impact, many individuals living with sickle cell disease continue to face barriers to specialized care, pain management, and consistent treatment. Awareness, education, and access to culturally responsive care remain critical.

That’s why we collaborated with the Sickle Cell Association of Texas (Mark Thomas Foundation) to become a part of the Black Men’s Health Clinic® (BMHC) Care Network™—helping connect individuals and families to support services and community resources to fight this disease. After years of research, community engagement, and regional collaboration, the Central Texas Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP) has been released. This plan serves as a clear roadmap for tackling environmental challenges while supporting long-term economic vitality, public health, infrastructure resilience, and quality of life.

Developed with input from government, healthcare, education, business, nonprofit, and community organizations, the CCAP reflects the diverse needs and perspectives of Central Texas. Stakeholder engagement and data-driven analysis to identify strategies to strengthen communities while preparing for future environmental and economic challenges.

BMHC served on the CCAP Advisory Group. As an advocate for health equity, we contributed a community health perspective on factors influencing well-being beyond traditional healthcare settings.

The release of the CCAP marks the completion of a significant regional planning effort and the start of collaboration focused on implementation. We are grateful to have participated and looks forward to seeing the positive impact this work can have on communities across Central Texas.

The Black Leaders Collective (BLC) is hosting their Healing, Rest, and Leadership Retreat—a wellness-centered experience designed specifically for Black leaders, caregivers, advocates, and community trailblazers who spend much of their time pouring into others. As a longstanding member of the BLC Health Advocacy Group, BMHC recognizes the importance of creating spaces for restoration, reflection, and healing.

Taking place from July 31 to August 2, 2026, this retreat offers participants an opportunity to step away from the demands of daily leadership and reconnect with practices that support long-term well-being. The experience will feature dynamic workshops, guided meditation and breathwork, sound baths, red light therapy, community reflection spaces, wellness experiences, and conversations with thought leaders, spiritual leaders, and health professionals.

Registration is currently open—a $25 deposit is required to reserve your spot. We encourage those carrying the weight of leadership, caregiving, and community responsibility to consider this opportunity to pause, restore, and heal.

The Black Men's Health Clinic® (BMHC) would like to recognize Abhishek Kushwaha for his contributions to the BMHC as a graduate-level intern through the University of Texas (UT) Austin CONNECT program.

Abhishek conducted a comprehensive analysis of the BMHC intranet website. His recommendations are providing significant guidance to our leadership, communications, and information technology teams, which is particularly important as we migrate our workplace productivity tools from Google to the Microsoft 365 platform.

Abhishek's efforts to restructure departmental navigation, organize administrative resources and templates, and create a more centralized and professional document-access system have helped strengthen our organizational efficiency, internal communication, and long-term operational continuity.

To show our gratitude for Abhishek's outstanding work, last Friday May 23rd, we recognized his dedication at a reception at the clinic where we presented him with a certificate in his honor.

Men in the United States continue to experience some of the highest rates of chronic illness and premature death.1 According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Black men have shorter average life expectancy rates and are disproportionately impacted by conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and prostate cancer. Black men are also less likely to have regular access to preventive healthcare services, often delaying care due to barriers including cost, access, stigma, and distrust within healthcare systems.2

The Black Men’s Health Clinic® (BMHC) strives to change these outcomes through education, outreach, healthcare navigation, and trusted support. This month, we encourage men to prioritize checkups, screenings, mental health, physical activity, and open conversations about wellness. 💪🏿
