Most prenatal conversations focus on folic acid intake.

But emerging research suggests that for some patients, the bigger question may be whether folate is actually reaching the brain and placenta effectively. 🧠

This recent study looked at FRAA-positive pregnancies and found lower ASD incidence, lower ASD severity scores, and higher cognitive outcomes in the folinic acid group.

Prenatal care is rarely one-size-fits-all. Personalized support matters. 🧬

This topic can feel confusing when you’re trying to choose the right prenatal support.

Trying to conceive? His cannabis use matters too. 👀

Research suggests cannabis use may impact s***m count, motility, morphology, and overall fertilization capacity.

At NNA, we look at the full picture of preconception health, including how to support s***m health and optimize both partners before pregnancy.

When preparing for pregnancy, everyday environmental exposures matter too.

One commonly overlooked source? Laundry detergent.

Many conventional detergents contain synthetic fragrances and chemicals that may contribute to overall toxic burden and irritate sensitive systems.

That’s one reason all of us at Neuronutrition Associates have been loving a non-toxic detergent brand, Washed Up Goods.

We love that it’s:
🫧 free from synthetic fragrance
🫧 designed for sensitive skin
🫧 safe for babies + families
🫧 made with thoughtfully sourced ingredients

Preconception health isn’t about fear or perfection. It’s about creating a supportive environment for your body, one small change at a time.

✨ Would you try a non-toxic detergent swap?

Trying for a baby? Start here.

A few simple swaps can help reduce everyday toxic exposures:

🥤 Swap plastic water bottles and containers for glass or stainless steel
🍳 Replace plastic cooking utensils with wood or metal alternatives
🕯️ Reduce synthetic fragrances in perfumes, candles, detergents, and body care
🧾 Avoid handling receipt paper when possible due to BPA exposure

Small changes can help support a healthier foundation before pregnancy.

Drop a 🙋‍♀️ if reducing everyday toxins is part of your preconception plan.

Your makeup bag may be worth a second look during preconception.

The FDA identified over 1,700 cosmetic products in the U.S. containing PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.”

While PFAS use in cosmetics has declined in recent years, reformulation is not universal. Look for brands that are transparent about ingredient sourcing and actively updating their formulas.

Especially during sensitive windows like preconception, reducing avoidable exposures may help support overall reproductive and hormonal health.
Preconception health isn’t about perfection. It’s about reducing avoidable exposures while supporting foundational health.

You may be taking folate during pregnancy, but are you taking the right form?

For some women, folate receptor antibodies can interfere with how folate is transported through the body and to the developing baby.

In one study of pregnant women with folate receptor antibodies, outcomes differed significantly between those taking folic acid and those taking folinic acid.

Those who took folic acid had an autism incidence of >60% in their children, while those who took folinic acid had a 10% incidence.

Same nutrient family. Different form. Very different implication.

If you’re expecting, preparing for pregnancy, or thinking about having a baby, this is worth discussing with a qualified practitioner.

Before pregnancy, what you remove can matter just as much as what you add.

From a functional medicine perspective, here are 3 areas we often look at first:

🍷 Alcohol → may impact hormone balance, nutrient absorption, and egg quality

🔥 Stress + inflammation → may disrupt hormone signalling, ovulation, and overall balance

🧴 Environmental toxins → everyday exposures can add burden to the body and may affect fertility

Small, intentional shifts can make a meaningful difference over time.

Preconception health isn’t just for expectant mothers. Expectant fathers can also support fertility by reducing common stressors on the body.

Save this post if you’re preparing your body for pregnancy and want to start with simple, supportive changes.

Your care plan is only as powerful as your ability to actually live it. 💚

Nutrition, supplements, lifestyle changes, and lab follow-ups; functional medicine moves a lot of pieces! And knowing what to do is very different from knowing how to do it when real life gets in the way.

That’s exactly where Alexis Maple, our certified health coach, comes in.

Alexis works alongside our clinical team to help patients turn their care plan into real, doable daily habits, from meal planning and reducing environmental toxins at home to staying on track between appointments without feeling overwhelmed.

Because the goal was never just a great plan on paper, it’s a life that actually feels better.

Think of your brain like a house. Folate receptors are the front doors, letting essential nutrients in. But sometimes, autoimmunity or inflammation can block these doors, leaving folate unbound.

The solution? Use the ‘back door’, aka a reduced folate carrier, with folinic acid.
