With the increasing number of natural disasters, it's vital to discuss family and community disaster planning before tragedy hits. Preparing to support vulnerable populations with medical needs is especially vital. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Emergency Preparedness Rule requires facilities to establish consistent emergency preparedness policies and procedures in order to increase patient safety during emergencies.

On International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember the lives lost to overdose and recognize the families, friends and communities forever changed by addiction.

We also support those rebuilding their lives through recovery. Each of us has role in reducing stigma, supporting prevention and building stronger, healthier communities.

Recovery is possible. And you are not alone.

Happy Friday!
We made it. YOU made it!

Sometimes, it's starting that we fear the most.
If fear is keeping you from trying something new, here are a few ways to move forward and take action:

🔹Recognize that there might not be a perfect time to start.
🔹Write down your plan. Seeing the words in print helps!
🔹Give yourself some grace as you navigate growing pains.
🔹Focus on one step at a time. Don't look down.
🔹Find your support crew and ask for their help when you need it.

You don't have to have everything figured out before you begin. Sometimes, you just have to take the first step.

Risk stratification is the process of analyzing aspects of an individual's health, healthcare history, daily life and other factors to identify those at greater risk for poor health outcomes.

Learn more about risk stratification in Issue 3 of TMF's nine-part series "Strategies to Reduce Preventable Hospital Utilization by Addressing Behavioral Health Needs," and see how it helps care teams identify at-risk patients earlier and tailor interventions to address behavioral health needs. https://bit.ly/4xaDJTs

From the desk of Tom Manley, CEO, TMF Health Quality Institute:

medical ID bracelets have been helping protect people in emergencies since the 1950s? MedicAlert created the first standardized medical ID to quickly communicate critical information, such as medical conditions, allergies and medications, when an individual can't speak for themselves. These IDs can be especially vital for older adults living alone, young children and people with chronic or cognitive conditions. To learn more about how a simple medical ID can help first responders deliver faster, safer care, visit https://www.medicalert.org/medicalert-awareness-month/.
