Here at Embody Wellness, we practice safe social media skills and know all too well the negative impacts that social media can have on our mental health. Here are four signs that indicate it's time for you to take a break from social media:
1. You're Constantly Comparing Yourself to Others: If you find yourself constantly comparing your life to the perfectly curated highlight reels of others on social media, it may be time to take a step back. Deirdre says that constantly comparing ourselves to others can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.
2. You're Easily Triggered by Negative Content: With the rise of cyberbullying and social media trolls, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the negative content that can flood our timelines. Deirdre suggests taking a break if you find yourself easily triggered by negative content and are unable to shake off the emotions it brings up.
3. You're Having Trouble Sleeping: The blue light emitted by our electronic devices can mess with our circadian rhythms, making it harder to fall asleep at night. Deirdre advises taking a break from social media if you find that you're having trouble sleeping, as quality sleep is crucial for our mental health.
4. You're Avoiding Real-Life Experiences: Finally, if you find yourself constantly scrolling through social media instead of engaging with the real world around you, it may be time for a break. Deirdre warns that spending too much time on social media can lead to feelings of isolation and disconnection from others.
So, if you're experiencing any of these signs, it may be time for a social media break.
