It's one of the scariest-sounding words in the exam room. Here's what it actually means.

A biopsy is the removal of a small tissue sample so it can be examined more closely. In gynecology, an endometrial biopsy is often a quick, in-office procedure — and it's frequently used to rule things out, not just find them. A biopsy is not a diagnosis.

Knowledge lowers fear. Understanding the "why" behind a test can make the whole experience less overwhelming.

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus and sometimes the cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. It ends menstrual periods and makes pregnancy impossible. It is used to treat many gynecologic conditions.

For some women, it's the right choice. But many women dealing with heavy bleeding don't realize there are less invasive options to explore first.

Asking your gynecologist "What are ALL of my options?" It's one of the most powerful questions in the exam room.

A missing period isn't always about pregnancy.

Amenorrhea means the absence of menstrual periods. It can be caused by many things — stress, intense exercise, hormonal changes, certain medications, or underlying health conditions. If your period disappears for three months or more (and pregnancy is ruled out), your body is trying to tell you something.

Track your cycles, even the missing ones. That record is a useful tool to have on hand at a doctors appointment.

Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for painful menstrual periods or severe cramps. It is caused by uterine contractions or underlying reproductive conditions.

Pain that regularly disrupts your work, sleep, or plans deserves a real conversation, because it can sometimes signal an underlying condition like fibroids or adenomyosis.

Pain is a sign from you body. Listen to what it's telling you.

If you've ever gotten an "abnormal Pap" call, you may have heard this word before.

Dysplasia means abnormal cells were detected, commonly on a Pap test. Dysplasia is not cancer. It means cells could become cancer over time if left unmonitored, which is why screening exists — to catch changes early, when they're most manageable.

An abnormal result is a reason to follow up, not a reason to panic.

When was your last Pap test?
