"Increasing organ donation in minority communities is not just about numbers โ€“ it's about saving lives and giving hope to families." โ€“Dr. Velma Scantlebury, the first African American female transplant surgeon.

On June 19, we recognize Juneteenth, honoring the day in 1865 when freedom finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas. This day is both a celebration of resilience and a call to action.

We stand in solidarity with efforts to eliminate disparities in donation and transplantation. Black Americans make up 13% of the U.S. population, and account for 27% of those waiting for an organ transplant in the U.S. Your decision to register as a donor can help save lives and bring hope to those waiting for a lifesaving transplant. This Juneteenth, join us in reflecting, uplifting, and recommitting to a future where every life has an equal chance.

Thank you to the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation for sharing this message!

Today and every day, we honor all who have given the gift of life through organ, eye and tissue donation. Thank you to all of the hospitals, funeral homes, DMVs, State Houses, families, and businesses who fly the Donate Life flag to honor donors and donor families.

More than 50,000 flags have been flown in honor of the gift of life since 2006. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š

Erica was involved in a severe car crash that damaged her right leg, and following the accident, she endured several difficult surgeries. Erica then noticed that she was feeling some discomfort in her left leg, and it was discovered that two of her ligaments were damaged. With the help of donor tissue, she was able to have the damage repaired. After surgery, she took time to acknowledge the opportunity she had gained because of another personโ€™s selfless gift. She wanted her donor family to know that their loved one had positively impacted her life in a very significant way.

โ€œI do my best to spread the word. I want everyone to know how many people are touched by donation and how many can benefit from it. Because of tissue donation, my quality of life is better than it ever was before.โ€

After a lengthy recovery period, Erika can walk around her city and hike with her wife and dogs. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š

You donโ€™t have to save a life to change one.

Victor Ramirez Jr. received a bone graft in 2019.

โ€œAlthough this was NOT life-saving,โ€ Victor says, โ€œthis has helped me in more ways than I ever thought possible.โ€

From restored mobility to renewed dignity, tissue donation helps Texans like Victor heal, rebuild, and keep showing up for the people they love.

Organ donation is a TexUS thing. Yโ€™all in?

During Asian Pacific Heritage Month, a post from our friends and colleagues at MTF Biologics provides an opportunity to highlight the benefits of tissue donation for a member of a profession that drives our mission.

We are celebrating Asian Pacific Heritage Month by honoring the achievements and culture of Asian-Americans & Pacific-Islanders in the US. Just like Ivy Chang, a nurse who experienced firsthand how tissue donations can make all the difference in someone's life โ€“ she received a donated tendon to replace her torn ACL after a skiing accident. โ€‹โ€‹

Now, Ivy chose to become a donor so that others could receive the same opportunity for recovery. We are proud of Ivy and all those who have dedicated their time to promoting APA communities! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’›โ€‹โ€‹
