Of those 46%, 1 in 2 engages in unhealthy weight control behaviors, such as skipping meals, not eating for over 24 hours, using diet pills, laxatives, and more. Many of these teens trying to control their weight also report poor mental health. The connection between physical and mental health is significant. Arizona teens are reporting high rates of poor mental health, but there is good news, too. The 2021 Arizona Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 4 in 10 teens reported poor mental health, with higher rates among females and LGBQ+ populations. While these statistics reveal concerning rates, supportive relationships with caring adults, friends, and people at school reduce teens' risk. Whether you work with teens or have teens at home, show them support and let them know they can talk to you.
