Tea Tip: Cover Your Cup While It Steeps!

Did you know that covering your herbal tea while it steeps can make a difference?

Many aromatic herbs contain naturally occurring volatile oils. The wonderful compounds responsible for much of their fragrance and flavor. When you pour hot water over your herbs, some of those aromatics can escape with the steam.

Simply cover your mug or teapot while your tea is steeping to help keep more of that goodness in your cup.

For most herbal blends, try covering and steeping for 5–15 minutes, depending on the ingredients and how strong you like your tea.

Then uncover, take in that beautiful aroma, strain, and enjoy.

Sometimes the smallest changes make a better cup of tea.

Your Tea Has Layers.

A thoughtfully crafted herbal tea is more than simply tossing a few herbs into hot water.

Different parts of a plant bring something unique to the cup:

Flowers - add beautiful aromas, delicate flavors, and soothing qualities.

Berries & Fruits - bring natural tartness, sweetness, color, and plant compounds.

Leaves - often provide the fresh, earthy, or traditional herbal character of a blend.

Roots - tend to create deeper, richer flavors and are traditionally used in many herbal preparations.

Seeds & Spices - add warmth, complexity, and wonderful aromatics.

And then there’s the art of blending.

A good tea isn’t necessarily about having the most ingredients, it’s about choosing ingredients that complement one another and finding the right balance so no single flavor overwhelms the cup.

That’s one of my favorite parts of creating tea, taking individual plants and turning them into something completely new together.
