DOT Physicals of Nassau County Certified FMCSA Medical Examiner providing appointment-based exams for CDL and non-CDL drivers

04/22/2026

Make sure your DOT physical is actually valid before it costs you your CDL ⚠️

🚛 Not every provider is certified, and if your exam is not done by an FMCSA Certified Medical Examiner, your medical card can be rejected and your license downgraded

❌ Always verify your examiner, confirm proper submission, and leave with your medical certificate in hand

📄 This is one of the most overlooked mistakes drivers make.

Didn’t get a 2-year DOT medical card? Here’s what your certification length really means 👇

Your DOT physical is based on your health and safety on the road — not pass or fail 🚛

Here’s a simple breakdown: ✅ 2 years: fully qualified, BP under 140/90

🟡 1 year: controlled condition like hypertension or diabetes

🟠 6 months: BP around 140–159 / 90–99 or condition needs closer monitoring

🔴 3 months: BP around 160–179 / 100–109, temporary certification to improve

🚫 180/110 or higher: not certified until controlled

Knowing these numbers ahead of time can help you avoid delays and get the longest certification possible 📋

Didn’t get a 2-year DOT medical card? 🤔 You’re not alone — and it doesn’t mean you failed.

Here’s what it really means: ✅ 2 years = no major medical concerns

🟡 1 year = stable condition, needs routine monitoring
🟠 6 months = needs closer follow-up
🔴 3 months = condition needs improvement or further evaluation

Most drivers are surprised when they don’t get 2 years, but there’s usually a clear medical reason behind it.

Most drivers think the DOT urine test is a drug test… it’s not 🚫

During your DOT physical, this test is used to screen for underlying health conditions that could affect your ability to drive safely 🩺

We’re checking for:
• Protein → may indicate kidney issues
• Glucose → can be a sign of diabetes
• Blood → may require further evaluation
• Specific gravity → shows hydration status 💧

If something comes back abnormal, it doesn’t automatically mean you fail, but it may require follow-up before certification 📋

Knowing this ahead of time can help you avoid delays and be fully prepared for your exam ✅

Many drivers get caught off guard during their DOT physical because they didn’t know the risk factors for sleep apnea 😴

You can still qualify for a DOT medical certificate — but certain findings may lead to further evaluation before certification is issued ⚠️

Common sleep apnea risk factors include:
• Neck circumference ≥ 17 in (men) or ≥ 16 in (women) 📏
• BMI over 30 ⚖️
• Loud snoring or witnessed pauses in breathing 😴
• Daytime sleepiness or fatigue 💤
Knowing this ahead of time can help you prepare, avoid delays, and stay compliant with FMCSA requirements 🚛

Many drivers worry that sleep apnea automatically disqualifies them from passing a DOT physical. The truth is — it doesn’t.

Drivers can still qualify for a DOT medical certificate when sleep apnea is properly evaluated and treated.
What medical examiners look for during a DOT exam:
✔️ Daytime sleepiness that may affect safe driving
✔️ CPAP treatment and compliance documentation (if prescribed)
✔️ Risk factors such as BMI, loud snoring, and neck circumference
✔️ Neck size ≥ 17 in (men) or ≥ 16 in (women) may prompt evaluation

Understanding the requirements ahead of time helps drivers prepare for their DOT physical and avoid delays in certification.

👀 Many drivers fail the vision portion of their DOT physical for a simple reason — they forget their glasses.

Here’s what you need to know before your exam:
✅️ Vision must be 20/40 or better in each eye (with or without correction)
✅️ You must have at least 70° peripheral vision in each eye
✅️ You must be able to recognize traffic signal colors

If you normally drive with glasses or contacts, bring them to your DOT physical. Without them, you will not pass the vision screening that day.

Drivers — losing just 1 hour of sleep from daylight saving time can increase fatigue and slow reaction time on the road.

When the clock moves forward, your body still thinks it's an hour earlier.

A few things that help this week:
• Go to bed 30–60 minutes earlier
• Stay hydrated on the road
• Avoid heavy meals late at night
• Take breaks if you feel fatigued

Fatigue is one of the most common causes of preventable crashes.
