You’ve probably heard us talk about thermal spread, but what does that actually mean?

It comes down to what happens to RF energy beyond the exact point where the electrode meets tissue.

Here’s the simple version: heat doesn’t necessarily stay right at the tip.

As RF energy interacts with tissue, some heat can extend beyond the immediate treatment area. That surrounding heat is what we refer to as the lateral thermal effect.
