June 5

It has been a nice week. Only 2 trips to the Clinic for count checks. Both times his numbers looked good enough and he was asymptomatic so he did not need any blood or platelets!

Today, he wanted to try to go to school for yearbook day. Since his counts were high enough, we decided it was safe for him to visit for a few hours.

Tonight, we will be attending the Upstate sponsored Survivor Night at the Syracuse Mets where Jack was asked to throw out the first pitch.

On Monday, we will be admitted to 11G at Golisano for his next round (10 of 14) of chemotherapy.

Keep our boy in your thoughts and prayers. If you are able any donation to our https://gofund.me/3ce996d21 would be so helpful and appreciated!

Next Friday he throws out the first pitch at the Syracuse Mets game as part of the Cancer Survivorship celebration!!

On June 8 we will be admitted for Cycle 10 (of 14) of chemo.

We are starting to see the light at the end of this first tunnel.

May 20 Update

It has been a little while since our last update. We have had a Rollercoaster of a month.

Jack was hospitalized for 7 days with a neutropenic fever, that was caused by e. coli. This was one of our toughest stays, physically and mentally since he was initially diagnosed.

He went home and was re-hospitalized 3 days later for his scheduled 5-day inpatient chemo cycle.

He has been receiving radiation treatments every weekday since April 20...last one is June 1st! One of the side effects of radiation is a slower than normal recovery of blood counts, so he has been receiving a number of blood transfusions.

Tomorrow we find out if his numbers have jumped enough to start his next cycle of chemo on Friday.

Last Sunday, we had the opportunity to attend the National Wrestling Duals. The Niver family has been so thoughtful to Jack and our family during this journey. Thank you Riley, Reese, Ruthie, Cliff and Heather Higgins Niver for the thoughts, prayers and the wonderful basket of some of Jack's favorites!

We would also like to thank Bo Bassett, Wyatt Hendrickson and their families for sending Jack a piece of the heart that lives in wrestlers.

Please consider donating and sharing our Go Fund Me to help with our ever increasing financial burden.

If you are new to our story, Jack was 14 years old and a starting 138 pounder for the Baldwinsville Wrestling Team. On December 31 he lost his ability to stand on his own and on January 2 doctors found a tumor in his spine, which was diagnosed as Ewing Sarcoma - a rare and aggressive cancer found in bones or soft tissue. Jack has been undergoing chemotherapy since January 5th.

We need your help. Please consider donating to our GoFundMe to help us with our expenses as we get to about halfway through Jack's treatments.

Jack has been battling with some side effects of his Radiation and Chemo treatments. He is home with us this week, but he is dealing with a sore throat again, fatigue and low blood counts.

Thank you for supporting us and Happy Mother's Day to all of the Mom's out there.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Tricia Jocko and the Reynolds Elementary Student Council for organizing a district-wide bottle and can drive to benefit Jack's treatments!

We had a very special opportunity to visit Reynolds this afternoon and meet with the students who helped promote the event. They demonstrated exceptional kindness and compassion. Jack was delighted to meet these outstanding young students and even attempted to recruit some for the Boys and Girls Wrestling Teams.

We appreciate the support and generosity of all community members who participated in the drive, as well as a special shout-out to Palmer Elementary School and the Baldwinsville Transportation Office for their additional donations!

THANK YOU!!!

April 30

After spending a week in the hospital for his infection and resulting fever, he was released on Monday. We got to visit the Cancer Clinic for IV antibiotics and the Radiation Department Tuesday and Wednesday for treatments. Today we are at Radiation and then will head upstairs for admission to the hospital for his 5-day inpatient chemo treatment.

He got to see his Ewings buddy Hunter at clinic yesterday. Hunter is amazing! His tumor was in his upper arm and had to travel to Boston for limb salvage surgery on April 14 and has surpassed everyone's expectations for his recovery so far. Jack is so impressed and excited for Hunter!!!

April 22

It's not all positive news during treatments. He started Radiation on Monday and had his 2nd session yesterday. He is tolerating that well so far.

Last night as I was flushing his PICC line, I noticed Jack felt warm. There is an established protocol to call the Doctor On Call for any fever more than 100.4 (38C). His temperature was 101.2 (38.44C). Off he went to the Pediatric ED at Upstate. He was admitted and now we sit at Golisano and his blood cultures are showing E. Coli. He is now on antibiotics to treat that and still went to Radiation today.

He feels crappy and is super fatigued, but still handling everything with as much grace as he can. His strength amazes us every day. We are so proud of him!

Today Jack finished his 7th (of 16) cycle of chemo and his first 28 Radiation treatments (5x/week for 5 1/2 weeks). He seems to have handled both things very well. We are so thankful that so far his treatments seem to be working and he is now in the phase that is going to kill the rest of this tumor and give him back the rest of his life back.

Today is Jack's 15th birthday. He is spending part of it at the Upstate Cancer Clinic and the WONDERFUL staff here has been making it so special for him.

Thank you to his whole care team for everything! You make our frequent trips here less stressful, less scary and surprisingly "fun". Jack has opened up and is so much more outgoing here than he ever was before his diagnosis and that is because of all of you.

His doctors, Dr. Comito, Dr. Tallarico, Dr. Aridgides, Brooke, NP and all of the others who helped reverse the neurological deficits he was experiencing in January, who are starting Radiation on the remains of the tumor next week and who are fierce advocates of Jack and his best interests.

His nurses at the Upstate Cancer Clinic and on 11G. Rachel, Savannah, Kylah, Shayla, Kaeleigh, Katie, Shaun, Gina, Danielle, Tara, Elizabeth, and all of the others (there are too many of you to name), but you are truly the glue to these units and your knowledge is unmatched, but your desire to work in Pediatric Hem/Oncology is a calling and we are all so blessed to have you watching over our child(ren)/loved ones.

All of the other support staff, Erica, Stephanie, Kristen, Taylor and the Child Life Team. You step in on some of the worst days of our lives and help to bring information, comfort and compassion to an amazingly stressful situation.

My family would not have been able to make it through the start of this journey without every one of you lifting us and supporting us through all of these moments.

On Jack's 15th birthday, we say THANK YOU!!! A few months ago we were a family of 4, with a great family and community behind us, but you have all truly become part of our family now and we are forever grateful for helping us get Jack to this day.

April 6 Update

We had a very nice Easter weekend and hope everyone had a fun-filled, relaxing weekend filled with family and friends.

Today, Jack went to see his Radiation Oncologist for his consultation and simulation for his Radiation treatments that start next Monday and run 5 days a week for 5 and a half weeks. He will be continuing his bi-weekly chemo during the Radiation, so if you are so inclined prayers for an easy and successful treatment are welcomed.

If you are able, donating to our GoFundMe would be appreciated!
